Because of the weak economy (little industry, small workforce-requirement in the agriculture) Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) is since 1990 one of the federal states of Germany which are most affected by population drain. Mainly young people (potential parents) move away. This has the consequence that — independently of the (relative) birth-rate — few children in MV are born. Therefore in the future the population will over-age and — also without emigration — the number of inhabitants will continue to go down. This will lead to the fact that in rural areas technical, social and cultural infrastructure must be cut and many small settlements will disappear completely. Thereby the landscape and the living conditions of people will completely change.
