The aim of this study was to investigate the process of denitrification in soils under three shelterbelts of different ages and plant composition as well as adjoining cultivated fields. During the entire vegetation season the activity of the nitrate reductase were higher in soils under two old shelterbelts than the young one and adjoining cultivated fields. These differences were probably apparent due to the content of organic carbon and total nitrogen. The concentrations of these compounds in soils under the young shelterbelt and adjoining cultivated fields were lower than in soils under old shelterbelts.
