The fuel conflict caused in Europe triggered by prices and natural gas supplies from Russia to Ukraine, arose anxiety about natural gas supplies in other countries. By reference to the article by Edward Garścia on the direction of power sector policy accepted by the public (AURA March edition) the author draws attention to the “Feasibility Study and Technical and Economic Considerations of LNG imports to Poland” made for the Polish government, listing problems which may be answered by the study.
There are around 145 million people who live in the basin of the Baltic Sea, including those living in 60 urban and industrial centers. The Baltic Sea is fed by some 200 rivers, of which oneeighth are "sewage rivers" (including the Vistula and Odra Rivers). Costly measures are required to abate pollution. The author presents types of sea pollutants as well as a detailed characteristics of the Baltic where these pollutants occur. He also widely discusses weapons dumped after the World War II (ammunition, mines, wrecks loaded with explosives, chemicals and fuel), particularly hazardous to the marine environment.
Seas and oceans are contaminated with various pollutants: petroleum and petroleum related products, discharges from land, chemicals spilt during loading and unloading, as well as during accidents. A rapid development of merchant fleet has increased possibility of ship disasters, including those of tankers, and this poses a major threat to seas and oceans. The author focuses on the contamination of marine environment with petroleum and petroleum related products.
The rapid growth of the demand for fuels and energy has led to a considerable environmental pollution, especially as regards the generation of greenhouse gases resulting in the greenhouse effect. It affects the worldwide climatic changes. It is caused by a high coal share in the power balance of specific countries. The article analyses coal management and energy policy in Poland and worldwide.
