The work presents results of five-years studies on the oscillations of ground water levels on the experimental drainage object Mokronosy. Analysing the amplitudes and occurrence frequency of ground water levels against the background of the configuration and microsculpture of the terrain, basic localities have been separated which are associated with the system characteristic of first horizon ground waters. It has been found that the localization in the microsculpture of the terrain in connection with the structure of the soil profile and the supply area decide about the need and coice of the way of drainage. One of the basic reasons of the small application of unsystematical drainage on richly sculptured post-glacial areas the presently binding principles of soil investigations for the needs of water meliorations. These principles do not sufficiently consider the influence of the microsculpture of the area on the evaluation of water supply range and the possibility of natural drainage of the soil profile.
