The authors describe first cases of Pacheco’s disease diagnosed in Poland in parrots at the begining of 1990. Mortality was high and clinical signs were absent in subacute course of the disease. When the disease prolonged the following symptoms were noted: apathy, anorexia, weakness and early death. Gross lesions were pronounced in the liver and spleen (oedema, petecchiae and necrotic foci). Intranuclear inclusion bodies in hepatocytes appeared to be the most pronounced histopathological feature. A preliminary characterization of the isolated virus (isolate 12/90) enabled to classify the isolate to a group of bird herpesviruses.
