Sorption of mercuric ions by cellulose and the experimental material was determined, after its mineralization, by flameless atomic absorption. The effect of Mg+2, Ca+2, Zn+2, Cu+2 and pH on the sorption of Hg+2 by the cellulose powder was examined. It was shown that the presence of the ions increased Hg+2 sorption by cellulose. The results were compared (at pH values ranging from 1.8 to 10.8) with Hg+2 sorption by selected dried raw and boiled leaf and root vegetables, apples, legume seeds and cellulose products made of fruit waste. The sorption of Hg+2 by all examined products was higher than that by cellulose, and in the extreme case (raspberry) it was 3.5 times higher. It was also found that pH value at which Hg sorption was highest depended on the type of the plant sorbent.
