W pięcioletnim okresie spożycie sodu istotnie spadło (p < 0,05) w dietach chłopców średnio o 0,7g/dzień w przeliczeniu na sól, a w dietach dziewcząt o 0,9 g/dzień (p < 0,05).

Too much sodium intake in the diet results in higher blood pressure, may rise sodium excretion to extracellular fluid, may harmfully affects vasoactivity and may also increase or stimulate myocardial fibrosis. In the randomly selected schools and classes from Warsaw's area, 2190 pupils aged 11-15 were examined for salt content in their diet, during the five-year period divided into two periods of time (1999-2000; 2005-2006). The salt content in diet was calculated on the basis of 24-h recall method and the information about the methods of salting and the additional salting of ready to eat products and dishes. During the five-year period, the sodium intake in boys, calculating as salt, has significantly declined (p < 0.05) by about 0.7 g/day on average and in girls by about 0.9 g/day (p < 0.05) in daily diets. It seems that while it would be the prudent decision to continue efforts to decline sodium intake and aiming for the optimal sodium intake would be reasonable. Keeping good health depends on the compromise between the two harmful effects of too high or too low intake of this component.
