Discussions on ecological agriculture in Poland are much affected by foreign input. This is demonstrated mainly in the arguments presented, terms used, and also by the kind of examples referred to. It makes some problems to appear far removed from reality. Comprehensive studies on the state of the Polish agriculture, its development and the balance with nature are yet to be completed. The author presents the past of agriculture and natural environment, their transformation throughout history and the shape of the modern Polish agriculture. In considering the environmental aspects of agriculture, the author discusses the impact of agriculture on the environment and how nutritionally valuable food can be produced by it.
We supplement the ongoing discussions and debates on environmental education with a statement by Professor J. C. Smyth, an internationally recognized expert, a consultant to the UNESCO-UNEP program, who was in charge of the team preparing materials for the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. In 1975 The Observer enumerated principal enemies of mankind: the demographic explosion, shortages of food, limited accessibility to resources, environmental degradation, improper use of nuclear energy and the nature of man himself. Since people’s lives’ depend on them themselves and on the environment broadly defined, we should take responsibility for the condition of the environment. Known environmental components are coupled with unknown systems and the global environment by many complex links. These systems and their interdependence pose a great challenge to education. Environmental education, the topic of this article, can be a response to this challenge.

The issues of environmental protection and rational use of natural resources introduced into the curricula of university and technical studies are to provide general and specialist knowledge in this field, to develop skills in interdisciplinary thinking and to stimulate economical use of natural resources and their maximum conservation. The principles of general environmental education implemented by specialist didactic teams as well as experience of Interfaculty Instutite of Environmental Protection of the Białystok branch of Warsaw University are discussed as an example.
