In rural areas approximately 26% of water from public and industrial water supply systems is of poor or unproven quality, particularly with the respect to its bacteriological contamination. Nationwide, only 38% of farm wells provides water of satisfactory quality. Inspections conducted by the sanitary and epidemiological authorities revealed that in some rural areas 95% of intakes yield is of poor quality. Thus, several million people in Poland drink water unsuitable for consumption. The reasons are manifold; some causes are discussed by the authors. The first major step to alleviate this predicament is to realize that in many cases it results from poor sanitary conditions in the very farm households affected.
Due to Poland’s general economic conditions, wells in rural areas are not monitored by sanitary services. According to official data, about 70% of the rural population drink water of unknown quality. The Institute for Land Reclamation and Grassland in Falenty conducts studies on drinking water from water intakes on farms. The studies are aimed at determining the extent of pollution of drinking water with fertilizer components. The author discusses the findings of detailed studies in the Nowy Targ Basin. This area is adjacent to the Czorsztyn—Niedzica water reservoir which is under construction. It is situated in the watershed of the Dunajec River, which will feed the reservoir. The quality of water flowing from this region will affect the purity of the reservoir water.
