Milk from 4,917 dairy cows of the Bohemian Spotted and Black Pied cattle in the 1st to 11th lactations was individually sampled on a Fossmatic apparatus and the somatic cell count was measured. The effects of the cowshed, month of the year, sequence of lactation, stage of lactation and of the father were evaluated using model equations of multi-factorial analysis according to HARVEY. The effects of housing, the sequence and the stage of lactation on the somatic cell count were found to be significant. The effect of the month of the year was insignificant. The effect of the father on the somatic cell count in the milk was not substantial. The heritability coefficient was h² = 0.033-0.044.
The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between the number of lipolytic bacteria, the season of the year, and susceptibility of goat milk fat to lipolysis. The study was carried out on 60 Polish White Improved goats. The animals were divided into two groups (30 goats in each) according to the number of lactations. Goats were maintained in pens and fed diets according to the INRA-system. Milk samples were taken once a month and analysed for fat, total protein and lactose content and somatic cell count. Moreover, each milk sample was analysed for the number of lipolytic bacteria and free fatty acids (FFA) immediately after milking and subsequently after 72 hours (storage in temperature 4°C). The levels of FFA in milk directly after milking in each season of the year were almost equal (the differences were insignificant). However after 72 hours the concentration of FFA tripled during the spring and the summer, while during the autumn the increase of level of FFA was negligible in comparison to the level at milking time. In the stored milk samples the number of lipolytic bacteria increased 460, 70 and 6-fold during the spring, the summer and the autumn, respectively. The obtained results indicate that there is no strong relationship between the increase of the number of lipolytic bacteria and the level of FFA. In the milk from primiparous goats the number of psychrotrophic bacteria and the level of FFA was significantly lower in comparison to milk of goats in the 2nd lactation. The authors suggest the need for further investigations concerning the identification of individual strains of lipolytic bacteria, proliferate rate and scale of lipolysis of fat in goat’s milk during storage at 4°C.
This study was carried out on the records of 698 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows, residing in 2 free-stall farms. The relationship between somatic cell counts in milk (SCC) and fertility was tested using records from the first 7 test-days (≈ months) after calving. The analysed fertility traits were the number of AI services per confirmed pregnancy and calving to conception interval. The SCC pattern on consecutive test-days was different in both farms, indicating a diverse microbiological background for mastitis. No significant correlations were found between SCC from particular test-days and cow fertility, whereas SCC determined on the test-day preceding the first AI service was correlated significantly with both fertility parameters (r from 0.11 to 0.14; p ≤ 0.05). Analysis of variances showed that the lowest values of both parameters were in the cows in which SCC on test- -day preceding the first AI service was below 50,000 and between 201,000-400,000 cells/ml of milk, whereas they were highest in the cows in which SCC exceeded 1,000,000 cells. Neither significant correlations nor significant differences among SCC classes were found for data from a test-day performed following the first AI service. In conclusion, the results of this study confirm that there is a close relationship between udder health and cow fertility, and show that SCC determined on the test-day preceding the first AI service after calving can be used for the identification of cows at risk of decreased fertility. The results also indicate that a negative effect of mastitis on cow fertility depends rather on the severity of the disease than on the etiological agent.
