Pathomorphological studies were carried out on 119 European bisons of both sexes and various ages shot in the years 1990-1994 in the Białowieża forest during breeding selection. The culled animals were old and ill, but some healthy ones were also eliminated to keep the herd size under control. The bisons were examined at necropsy and histopathologically. Pathomorphological lesions caused by parasites were observed most frequently in the lungs and livers. Myocardial parasitic lesions were also quite common. In a large number of male bisons some lesions were found in the prepuce and penis.
The goal of the studies was evaluation of the influence of some parameters of cellular immunity on age and anatomo-pathological lesions in the bison. The results of the studies show an influence of the state of health of the bison as measured in a system of assessing points for various gross pathological lesions, on an importent cellular immunity parameter (reactions level of lymphocytes to mitogen (PHA). The better the ability to mobilize lymphocytes the better the health condition of the bison was found to be (lower amount of anatomopathological points). At the same time a higher mobility of lymphocytes was found in older animals. Results of hematological tests. Which showed higher total lymphocyte and leucocyte numbers (per 1 mm³ of blood) also suggest, a better effectiveness of the immunologic system in older animals.
The studies were carried out on 35 European bisons of both sexes and various age. The animals were culled for the following reasons: poor condition, old age, lameness and diseases of the reproductive tract in males. Blood for biochemical tests was collected from the extern jugular vein, and the carcasses were autopsied and histopathologi- cally examined. An analysis of the relationships between selected biochemical blood parameters (total protein, immunoglobulins, urea, uric acid, alkaline phosphatase) points to the role of disorders of the urinary tract in males in the pathogenesis of diseases of the penis and prepuce. The results also suggest that disorders of the urinary tract which are common in both male and female European bisons incraese their susceptibility to other diseases.
