The objective of the paper is to answer the question: How could the state agricultural advisory system join realization of strategy of the rural areas multifunctional development? Activity of agricultural advisory centres in the sphere of multifunctional development of rural areas would mostly aim at economical education of country folks, activation of agricultural and non-agricultural branches of economy and it can be represented as: 1. Help country people to obtain higher incomes off their farms as well as help in undertaking other economic activities which would secure additional incomes and therefore multiply financial means in rural areas; 2. Advisory service aimed at development of farmers mutual aid and forming new places of employment; 3. Organization of educational activities which have in view of rural communities leaders, who would contribute to increase of economic and social activities of country people; 4. Advisory service in the sphere of enterprise and marketing of farm products; 5. Participation in working out local programmes of rural area development; 6. Dissemination of innovations of various possibilities of activities in the country.

The starting point is the conviction of the need for structural transformation in agriculture. This inevitable process may entail various economic and social problems. This positive aspect of co-operative movement depends on changes in the environment as well as on the methods and forms of co-operative activities. The changing spatial distribution of activities and people in Europe is leading to difficultics and uncertainties in the rural areas. Therefore the issue of rural development has become increasingly acute and is a matter of concern for policymakers and scientists. This paper aims at presenting the theoretical and methodological aspects of rural development by examining the economic factors which portray the space structuration and its change over time. It stresses the role of aggregation and despersion forces, the effect of organisational factors, the analytical framework which is available to shed light on the economic mechanisms involved. Econometric and synthetic models that are available for quantifying rural development are also discussed and some conclusions for research are emphasised.

Regional differentiation of rural areas in Poland is enormous and sbould often be considered as undesirable disproportion. Therefore efficacious regional rural policy is needed. Against this background essential problems of theory and philosophy of regional rural policy are discussed as challenges and dilemmas. The challenges concerning rural areas are: quality of life, regional order and protection of environment, multifunctional development, interregional equilibrium and adjustment to regional policy of the European Union. The dilemmas concern: quality of soils, development ratio according to time, effectiveness, interregional vs. infraregional policy, and regional policy institutions. Also, actual questions and proposals for regional science development concerning rural areas are presented.
