Observations on the aphid number were carried out in the years 2001–2003, simultaneously in four different sites. In each of these three shrubs were marked: of park rose ‘Grandhotel’, rugosa rose, multiflorous rose and five shrubs of border roses of various cultivars. The purpose of these study was to conduct a quantitative analysis of the aphid fauna colonizing roses growing in various types of city green areas. As a result of studies conducted the occurrence of 10 aphid species was found out on the analyzed shrubs. No significant differences were observed in the species composition of aphids colonizing roses growing in various types of city green areas. The studies showed significant differences in the aphid number between the analyzed sites. The road and street sites on the one hand and the road and housing estate ones on the other were most similar regarding the number of aphids.
Shoot tips from in vitro plants of four rose species were cryopreserved by the droplet vitrification method. Optimized conditions involved exposure to loading solution for 20 min, then treatment with plant vitrification solution (PVS2) for 20 min (Rosa agrestis, R. canina and R. dumalis) or 30 min (R. rubiginosa) followed by freezing in liquid nitrogen. Survival rate ranged from 78.3 to 95.1%, depending on the species. Regrowth rate of shoot tips was 50.5% for R. agrestis, 63.2% for R. rubiginosa, 71.4% for R. dumalis and 78% for R. canina. The preculture of donor plants in a medium with 0.25 цЫ sucrose facilitated the isolation of shoot tips and increased regrowth rate after cryopreservation. Plant regeneration was carried out in Murashige and Skoog medium with 1 цЫ 6-benzylaminopurine, 1.5 цЫ gibberellic acid and 0.087 M sucrose. Plants regenerated from cryopreserved shoot tips did not display morphological alterations in comparison with non-cryopreserved shoot tip - derived plants.
All rose cultivars are propagated by asexual methods and the one of them is hardwood cuttings rooting. The aim of the study was to verify the possibility of effective propagation of shrub and pillar roses of different origin by hardwood cuttings. The shoots were collected in autumn. The cuttings were prepared and planted in spring. The rooting were conducted in open field and greenhouse. There were used commercial rooting powders containing IBA or NAA: Ukorzeniacz AB aqua, Ukorzeniacz B aqua, Rhizopon AA 020 XX, Chryzotek beige 004 XX, Ukorzeniacz – korzonek D DS. Of the ten cultivars chosen for the present experiment, only two took root effectively, with good quality rooted cuttings: ‘Excelsa’ (31.2% in open field, 56.5% in greenhouse) and ‘New Dawn’ (18.7% in open field, 14.3% in greenhouse). Using commercial rooting stimulants did not guarantee an increase in the number or in the parameters of growth of the rooted cuttings. The most effective preparation was Chryzotek beige 004 XX for ‘Poppius’ (38.0%) rooted in the open field, and for ‘Kew Rambler’ (23.5%) in the greenhouse.
Influence of triforine (standard), garlic juice, Antifung 20 SL (20% vermicompost), Atpolan 80 EC (76% mineral oil), Biosept (grapefruit juice) and Atonik AL on development of Sphaerotheca pannosa var. rosae was evaluated. Garlic juice, Atpolan 80 EC and Biosept applied as rose spray gave similar effect in the control S. pannosa var. rosae as triforine. Observations under scanning electron microscop indicated that 24 hrs after rose spraying all tested compounds cause almost complete collapse of conidia and hyphe.
In the years 2004-2006 in Kraków, phenological observations of climbing roses were conducted in order to determine the length and dates of their flowering period. The diameters of their flowers were also compared. Eight flowering repeating cultivars were selected for the experiment: ‘Climbing Souvenir de la Malmaison’, ‘Dortmund’, ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Goldstern’, ‘New Dawn’, ‘Parade’, ‘Sympathie’ and ‘White New Dawn’. During the studies, the shrub roses were not artificially watered in order to create conditions similar to those prevailing in public green areas. It was observed that irrespective of the air temperature pattern in a given year, the studied cultivars did not bloom before 15 June. In 2006 high temperatures (above 20°C), which continued throughout the whole flowering period, caused its shortening, and the interval between the first and the next flowering in the season lasted longer than in the previous years. In the years 2004-2006, the cultivar ‘New Dawn’ bloomed the longest. In 2005 the studied cultivars produced larger flowers than the next year. The cultivars ‘Dortmund’ and ‘White New Dawn’ were characterised by the smallest diameter of flowers, whereas ‘Climbing Souvenir de la Malmaison’, ‘Golden Showers’ and ‘Parade’ were marked by the largest diameter.
The morphology of pollen grains of Rosa gallica was studied on the basis of material from 15 natural localities in southern Poland. It was ascertained that the diagnostic features of pollen grains of R. gallica were: the presence of deep, often Y-shaped striae in a linear arrangement; numerous perforations of various, rather big diameters on the bottom of striae; the occurrence of operculum on the membrane of ectocolpus; the presence of costae ectocolpi and fastigium in the area of endopori. The most significant differences among the particular samples studied concern the shape of grains. The differences between pollen grains of 15 individuals of Rosa gallica from southern Poland are generally slight. The most discriminating measured character is length of equatorial axis of pollen grain and length of ectocolpi and thickness of exine along polar axis. The remaining differentiate the individuals with smaller significance. The differences between Silesian samples and all the other examined ones may result from origin of different Pleistocene refugia.

The results of PCR examination indicated that during two years of tissue culture at standard conditions, on the medium with BAP 1 mg l-1 and continuous temperature of 20oC, phytoplasma could be detected in diseased plants of rose cv Sacha and Jazz. In the second year of micropropagation phytoplasma detection rate in tissues of infected roses increased and was relatively higher than in the first one. To test whether phytoplasmas are sensitive to temperature and light intensity, phytoplasma-affected micropropagated rose plants were grown on medium with BAP 1.0 or 0.5 mg l-1 and at the temperature of 4, 15, 20 or 25oC in darkness or in the light. PCR analysis indicated that phytoplasma detection was not effected by these conditions during 4 weeks of culturing. However, phytoplasma was not detectable in rose plants after 8 weeks culturing on the same medium without transplanting. Micropropagated rose shoots maintained on medium with Gentamycin or Baytril at the concentration of 25.0 or 50.0 mg l-1 had reduced growth and were chlorotic. However, no direct effect of applied antibiotics on phytoplasma detection was evidenced.
This article presents the results of a study on the cultivation of romanas rose on ash, carried out between 2004 and 2006. The experiment involved two different substrata and five different fertile covers. The control group comprised of roses growing on native grounds and raw ash rock. The study measured the viability of the plants, number of flowers and fruit borne from these flowers. This study showed that the techniques of reclamation applied in this study signifi cantly infl uenced the examined characteristics of romanas rose. Fertile covers increased the growth and blooming, however the most desirable results were obtained when the cover consisted mostly of mineral matter.
