Mannheimia haemolytica leukotoxin (Lkt) is the major factor that contributes to lung injury in bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. Supernatant preparations containing Lkt produced by M. haemolytica serotype 1, grown in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with BSA or FBS and without supplements were evaluated during this study. Analysis of obtained Lkt showed presence of 105kDa antigen (SDS-PAGE electrophoresis). The obtained bacterial protein fraction estimated as Lkt was detected by Western blotting with mouse monoclonal (Mab 605 and Mab 601) anti-Lkt antibodies. No significant differences were found in obtained leukotoxin between wildtype and reference M. haemolytica strains. Our studies showed that growth in media supplemented with BSA or FBS had no significant influence on leukotoxin production. When BSA or FBS supplements were used, additional protein fractions in electrophoregrams SDS-PAGE were observed. These protein bands did not react with Mab 605 and/or Mab 601 in Western blotting analysis. Lkt immunogenicity was detected by immunoblotting with sera from Lkt immunized rabbits and calves.

Phenolics in the Tussilago farfara leaves

Coltsfoot leaves (Farfarae folium) are used in the European medicine in respiratory tract diseases, for cough, bronchitis and asthmatic disorders, while in the traditional Chinese medicine only flower buds (Farfarae flos) have been recognized as a medicine. A short literature review shows that most data concern the chemical composition of the coltsfoot flowers. During the carried out studies we have isolated and identified (UV, 1H and 13C NMR, analysis of acid and enzymatic hydrolyze products) six known flavonols from the coltsfoot leaves: kaempferol and its 3-O-β-glucopyranoside and 3-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)- β-glucopyranoside, along with quercetin derivatives: 3-O-β-arabinopyranoside, 3-O-β- glucopyranoside and 3-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-β-glucopyranoside. Moreover, we have detected the presence of three phenolic acids.
A diet, individually customized to the needs of sportsmen and sportswomen prepares them better for competition and achievement of better sports results. However, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and frequently recurrent upper respiratory tract infections pose a common problem observed among athletes of disciplines such as triathlon, cycling and marathon. Diarrhea, splashing in the intestines or gastrointestinal bleeding make it difficult to start and win in the race. Recently researchers have paid special attention to the therapeutic effect of probiotic strains on the human body. Various probiotic strains may have a beneficial effect on elimination of disorders mentioned above among athletes of these disciplines. Still, researchers continue looking for answers to the question how a specific probiotic strain is able to reduce the risk of the gastrointestinal tract and the respiratory system disorders appearing during training or competition. Attention is also drawn to the possible impact of probiotics on the physical capacity athletes and their athletic performance. Probiotic strains properly applied may have a positive influence on the athletes’ bodies, but still randomized controlled trials are required to prove this thesis.
Background. At present, there are many types of milk fermented drinks/beverages on the market that often contain added probiotic microflora. Numerous studies indicate that such products are frequently consumed by adolescents. Within this group, symptoms of respiratory illness feature prominently as well as various and frequent disorders of the gastro-intestinal system that give rise to either constipation or diarrhoea. Objectives. To determine the effect of consuming fermented milk drinks on the immune systems in teenagers aged 13-16 years through analysing their intakes in relation to how often respiratory illness, constipation and diarrhoea had occurred. Material and methods. A survey was performed on 150 middle-school pupils aged 13-16 years. Correlation coefficients were determined between the frequency of consuming fermented drinks with the incidences of respiratory disease, constipation or diarrhoea. Results. Most subjects declared that their state of health was satisfactory and that they regularly ate meals. Those consuming fermented milk drinks for over a year constituted 88%. It was found that 56% of all subjects drank such beverages at least once daily or several times a week. The decrease observed in consuming these drinks resulted in increasing problems of bowel evacuation ranging from 3% in those drinking daily to 26% that drank less than once monthly. The incidence of respiratory tract illness was seen to rise whenever fewer fermented milk beverages were consumed. Analogous findings were seen also in the incidence of diarrhoea. Subjects also considered that such drinks improved health and yoghurts were the most frequent type of these drinks consumed. Conclusions. Gastro-intestinal function may be enhanced by regular consumption of fermented milk drinks together with a decreased incidence of respiratory tract illness. However, the effect of how often such drinks are consumed on the aforementioned conditions remains unresolved.
In Europe, the use of herbs in the treatment of various ailments had been natural for centuries. Nowadays, phytotherapy is a way to support typical pharmacotherapy of many diseases. Borage (Borago officinalis L.) is one out of more than 20 000 plants of therapeutic properties. The results of some studies indicate that Borago officinalis L. is commonly used adjunctively in disorders of the respiratory system, urinary tract, arthritis and skin problems. Biologically active compounds found in borage oil are used as additives in the treatment of atherosclerosis, as well as in the regulation of certain metabolic processes.
Gallibacterium spp. is a new genus of the family Pasteurellaceae. These Gram-negative rods are a part of the physiological flora of the upper respiratory tract, genital tract and gastrointestinal tract of birds and have been found in different species of domestic and wild birds. They are opportunistic pathogens that were isolated from birds with pathological lesions or conditions. This paper presents the first case of Gallibacterium anatis isolation from peacocks with respiratory tract infections. Three isolates from lung tissue were identified on the basis of phenotypic properties as Gallibacterium anatis biovar Haemolytica. The whole flock of peacocks was isolated in a small closed farm building for 5 weeks. During this period the first clinical signs of the disease were observed. That situation could result in immunosuppression in birds, which is one of the predisposing factors of opportunistic G. anatis infections. This observation confirms the important role of the stress factor in an infection caused by these bacteria.
