Momordica charactia lin( Bitter melon) has been the interest of many studies by researchers for a long time due to its very interesting human beneficial properties. It belongs to cucurbitacea family and momordica genus. It is used by human consumption all over the world in different forms such as a vegetable and /or medicine. The researchers have concentrated on the studies on its fruits and some times on its seeds and leaves. The present study is an extensive investigation of the quantitative elements such as Ca, Cd ,Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Zn, K, N, and P of the fruit- skin, fruit-flesh, fruit-seed, tissue skin, leaf and root of the momordica charantia lin using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The result shows a quite good variation of the concentration of the elements in different part of the plant.
The studies were conducted in the years 2000–2002 at the Experimental Station of Czesławice near Nałęczów on a field of monocultures of runner bean and soybean. The subject of the studies was the rhizosphere soil of these plant species. The experiment of each plant included 2 combinations, i.e. with dressing the seeds with Zaprawa Oxafun T and without dressing the seeds (control). Results of the microbiological analysis of the rhizosphere soil of runner bean and soybean showed that the plants grown of the seeds dressed with Zaprawa Oxafun T always gave a greater number of bacteria colonies, Bacillus spp. and Pseudomonas spp. but a smaller number of fungi colonies than in the control combination. In comparison to the rhizosphere soil of soybean, the rhizosphere soil of runner bean contained much more bacteria and a much lower number of fungi colonies. Among the obtained saprotrophic macroorganisms, a more numerous group of antagonistic bacteria and fungi was achieved from the rhizosphere soil of runner bean than from the rhizosphere soil of soybean. Whatever the plant species, considerably more antagonistic bacteria and fungi occurred in the combination with Zaprawa Oxafun T as compared to the control. The plant species as well as the introduction of Zaprawa Oxafun T into the soil together with the seeds had a considerable influence on the quantitative and qualitative composition of the populations of soil microorganisms.
The purpose of the studies was to determine the populations of fungi and bacteria after the cultivation of spring wheat and winter wheat. As a result of the studies it was found out that winter wheat had a stimulating effect on the total number of bacteria, especially Pseudomonas spp.. On the other hand, spring wheat had a smaller influence on the growth of bacteria, while stimulating the growth of the number of fungi. Among the bacteria and saprophytic fungi isolated from the soil after the cultivation of particular plants there were microorganisms having antagonistic effect towards phytopathogens. Three times as many antagonists were found in the soil after the cultivation of winter wheat as after the cultivation of spring wheat.
This study aimed to determine the influence of sewage sludge alkalization and acidification on the qualitative and quantitative composition of keratinolytic and keratinophilic fungi in a model experiment. The sludge was alkalized to pH 9 with 0.5N NaOH, 0.5N KOH, 0.5N NH₄OH or with 2% burnt lime mixed with powdered limestone (20g CaO + 5g CaCO₃), and acidified to pH 4 with 0.5N HCl, 0.5N HNO₃ or 0.5N H₂SO₄. The sludge with unmodified pH (6.5) served as control. The hair baiting method with four incubation temperatures (23, 29, 33, and 37°C) was used to examine fungi. The sludge alkalization with KOH, NaOH or CaO+CaCO₃ increased the number of keratinolytic fungi but decreased the number of keratinophilic fungi. The inhibition of the growth of keratinolytic fungi was observed due to the sludge acidification with H₂SO₄ or HCl. The sludge acidification with HNO₃ or HCl stimulated keratinophilic fungi to grow. Sludge acidification with HNO₃ eliminated keratinolytic fungi, while acidification with H₂SO₄ eliminated keratinophilic fungi. Results are discussed from ecological and epidemiological points of view.
The objective of this work was to use the fluorometric method to study the antioxidative properties of the preparations obtained from the seed coats of red and brown beans. The preparations were obtained by extraction of the polyphenols with 0.5% HCl solution in methanol, vacuum concentration and lyophilisation. The qualitative and quantitative compositions of the preparations were determined. The antioxidative properties of polyphenolic preparations were determined by measuring the fluorescence as produced by the formation of hydroxide radicals from hydrogen peroxide and sodium benzoate in the presence of copper ions and dithioerythritol (DTET) in phosphate buffer, pH 7.2. The fluorescence of hydroxide derivatives was measured spectrofluorometrically. The studies showed that the preparations had the capabilities to scavenge the hydroxide radicals by 51% in the case of brown pigments and by 47% in the case of red pigments.
Określono skład ilościowy i jakościowy grzybów w suszach wybranych roślin leczniczych. Badania obejmowały całkowitą populacją grzybów oraz gatunki termofilne i termotolerancyjne. Udział grzybów termofilnych i termotolerancyj- nych oraz drożdży w całkowitej populacji grzybów zależał od badanej próbki suszu. Znaczący udział w populacji grzybów w suszach miały gatunki kserofilne.
Wprowadzenie. Karmienie piersią uznawane jest za najkorzystniejszy, naturalny sposób żywienia niemowląt. Skład ilościowy i jakościowy mleka kobiecego jest idealny do realizacji wszystkich potrzeb żywieniowych niemowlęcia do 6 miesiąca życia, przy założeniu, że sposób żywienia matki karmiącej jest prawidłowy. Cel badań. Celem pracy było oszacowanie spożycia energii oraz białka, tłuszczów, węglowodanów i cholesterolu w grupie 100 kobiet karmiących piersią, w wieku od 19 do 38 lat, z województwa mazowieckiego. Materiał i metoda. Badanie przeprowadzono w okresie od września 2010 do marca 2011. Wyniki uzyskano przy użyciu kwestionariusza ankietowego oraz metody 3-dniowego bieżącego notowania. Wyniki. Wartość energetyczna racji pokarmowych była zgodna z normą u 9% badanych kobiet. Aż 91% respondentek charakteryzowało się zbyt niską wartością energetyczną diety. Spożycie białka zgodne z normą odnotowano u 64% badanych kobiet, tłuszczu u 45%. Zalecenia spożycia kwasów tłuszczowych wielonienasyconych realizowało 61% badanych kobiet, nasyconych 15%, węglowodanów 36%. Spożycie cholesterolu było za wysokie u 45% badanych kobiet. Odnotowano istotny statystycznie wpływ wykształcenia na wielkość spożycia tłuszczu ogółem oraz kwasów tłuszczowych nasyconych i wielonienasyconych, sacharozy oraz wartość energetyczną całodziennych racji pokarmowych. Kobiety z wykształceniem wyższym spożywały od 12% do 20% więcej wymienionych składników stosunku do kobiet z wykształceniem średnim/zawodowym. Wnioski. Istnieje potrzeba dalszej edukacji kobiet w okresie laktacji na temat prawidłowo zbilansowanej diety, gdyż w ocenianych racjach pokarmowych kobiet karmiących wykazano wiele nieprawidłowości.
The increasing consumption of sugars is one of the factors contributing to the obesity epidemic. Our research was carried out on the sugar composition of apples. The purpose of the study was to determine the quantitative and qualitative composition of sugars of different apple varieties from the East Bohemia region. In this study dry matter content and sensory characteristics were also evaluated. Apples contain fructose, glucose and sucrose. Fructose is known to be a highly lipogenic sugar that has profound metabolic effects in the liver, and has been associated with many of the components of the metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, elevated waist circumference, dyslipidemia, and hypertension). Fructose, glucose and sucrose in different apple cultivars were extracted with ethanol, derivatized, and determined by gas chromatography. 17 cultivars of apple were analysed. The average fructose content was 6.52 ± 1 g/100 g of apple (8.1 – ‘Golden Delicious’, 4.8 – ‘Selena’), glucose content 1.46 ± 0.55 g/100 g of apple (3 – ‘Red Delicious’, 0.9 – ‘Ontario’), and sucrose content 4.75 ± 1.35 g/100 g of apple (7.2 – ‘Opal’, 2.1 – ‘Melrose’). The cultivars suitable for nutrition of patients with metabolic syndrome are ‘Selena’ and ‘Ontario’.
The purpose of the studies carried out in the years 1996-1998 was to establish the composition of bacteria and fungi communities in the soil of spring wheat and winter wheat. Besides, the studies provided the information on quantitative and qualitative composition of amino acids as well as the amount of water soluble sugars in roots exudates of these cereals. The microbiological analysis of 1 g of dry weight of soil coming from the rhizosphere of spring wheat revealed the mean number of 4.94 x 10⁶ bacteria colonies and 45.08 x 10³ fungi colonies. In the case of winter wheat, in 1 g of dry weight of the rhizosphere soil 5.07 x 10⁶ bacteria colonies and 28.59 x 10³ fungi colonies (mean of three year studies) were found . Besides, winter wheat, through the proper composition of root exudates, created positive nutritional conditions for the growth of microorganisms showing antagonistic effect towards pathogenic fungi. The rhizosphere soil of winter wheat contained 1.5 times more antagonistic bacteria and more than twice antagonistic fungi as compared to spring wheat.
This work describes bacteriological studies on the quantitative and qualitative composition of bacteria from the family Enterobacteriaceae as well as numbers of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas hydrophila in underground waters of the Omulewski Reservoir, a source of water for consumption. In 1994-1995 studies were carried out on 11 deep wells and 3 piezometric holes. Bacteria from the family Enterobacteriaceae were found in amounts from a few to many colonies (cfu/100 ml), depending on the sampling station and the method of land use (groups of wells). In the entire study period and usually in all wells the following dominated: Citrobacter freundii, Ervinia herbicola, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, and Serratia marcescens. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas hydrophila were present in small amounts in the majority of water samples (from a few to several colonies) and only when large quantities of water were collected (100 ml).
