In the present study, the predictions of the computational model of centroid extraction were verified in psychophysical examination of the length illusion induced by stimuli comprising the conventional or asymmetric Müller-Lyer wings as the contextual distractors. In experiments, the illusion magnitude changes evoked by rotation of distractors with different spatial parameters were quantitatively determined. It was demonstrated that the model calculations adequately account for the illusion magnitude variations shown by all the subjects for all modifications of stimuli. A good correspondence between the experimental and theoretical data supports the suggestion that local positional biases caused by the neural processes of automatic centroid extraction can be one of the main reasons of emergence of illusions of the Müller-Lyer type.
The aim of the study was to adapt the method of selenocysteine content determination elaborated by Jones et al. and Cone et al. for some oxidoreductive enzyme analysis as well as to modify it. Determination was based on usage of conventional amino acid analyzer. Modification consisted in introducing the stage of yeast protein purification from reagents after carboxymethylation process containing selenocysteine with iodoacetic acid according to procedure described by Tappel et al., as well as applying the internal standard during analytical procedure. Application of amino acid analyzer made it possible to separate selenocysteine from other components of the sample analyzed which was sufficient for quantitative measurement. Internal standard used eliminated errors resulting from additional preparation: the necessity for amino acid coupling with iodoacetic acid, purification of complex from the excess of reaction agents as well as inaccuracy commonly made during solution pipetting and dosing onto the chromatographic column.
Return on equity is among the basic ratio of economic benefit for enterprise owners. It must be generated as a fundamental condition for the continuous operation and development of an enterprise, regardless of the type of business. The main purpose of this paper was to identify the strength and direction of impact of selected determinants behind financial profitability of animal feed producers. The analysis was based on a six-factor cause-and-effect model linking the determinants of financial profitability to three areas of business activity: the operating, financial and fiscal area. This study relied on the financial data between the years 2011–2016 of individual financial statements of animal feed producers. Based on the results of multiple regression analysis, no factors could be identified that consistently affect the return on equity in the period considered. However, the following can be concluded to be the main factors affecting the variation in return on equity of animal feed producers: the ratio of cash from operating activities to net sales; the return on capital employed; and the financing structure. As shown by this study, in order to improve profitability ratios and, thus, to provide more value to owners and increase the value of the company, managers of establishments producing animal feed should focus their efforts on improving cash management efficiency and asset turnover as well as managing sources of funding.
The paper deals with the dependence of the share of households’ food expenditure on the total expenditure and the household’s size. This problem is important in applied welfare economics. According to the Engel’s law, the poorer household, the greater proportion of its total expenditure is devoted to the food consumption. In the study, the Working-Leser model was applied to Polish households microeconomic data from 2000, 2005 and 2009.
A qualitative and quantitative analysis of anthocyanins in juices of three varieties of strawberry (Senga, Ducat, Marmolada), raspberry (Beskid, Canby, Malling Seedling), black currant (Ben Lomond, Titania, Ojebyn) and red currant (Rondom, Jonker, Holenderska) picked in three following years: 1998, 1999 and 2000, was presented in this paper. An HPLC technique was applied using a Gilson chromatograph and a DAD detector. Prior to the chromatographic analysis, anthocyanins were purified on a mini-column Sep-Pak C18 Waters. It was indicated that within species the juices examined differed in the quantitative and qualitative composition of anthocyanins. Pelargonidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-xylorutinoside were the main anthocyanins in strawberry and red currant juices, respectively, independently of variety. Those anthocyanins were not detected in raspberry and black currant juices, in which cyanidin-3-sophoroside as well as delphinidin-3-rutinoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside were the main anthocyanins, respectively. Differences of anthocyanin composition of juices obtained from different berry fruits create the possibility of detecting the adulterations of expensive raspberry and black currant juices with cheap strawberry and red currant juices on the basis of anthocyanin analysis.
LacCer/CDw17 is the most abundant GSL in neutrophils. The cell-surface and intracellular presence of LacCer was determined quantitatively using anti-CDw17 mAbs in a flow cytometry assay. The quantified alterations in the level of CDw17 antigen expression are consistent with alterations in LacCer content, determined chemically. Our results show that CDw17 antigen expression defines successive stages in the maturation of the myeloid cell. The assessment of cell-surface and intracellular CDw17 expression may be useful in evaluating neutrophil physiological status.
