Background The functional foods constitute the important segment of the food market. Among factors that determine the intentions to eat functional foods, the psychological factors play very important roles. Motives, attitudes and personality are key factors. The relationships between socio-demographic characteristics, attitudes and willingness to purchase functional foods were not fully confirmed. Consumers’ beliefs about health benefits from eaten foods seem to be a strong determinant of a choice of functional foods. Objective The objective of this study was to determine relations between familiarity, attitudes, and beliefs in benefits and risks about functional foods and develop some conceptual models of willingness to eat. Material and methods The sample of Polish consumers counted 1002 subjects at age 15+. The foods enriched with vitamins or minerals, and cholesterol-lowering margarine or drinks were considered. The questionnaire focused on familiarity with foods, attitudes, beliefs about benefits and risks of their consumption was constructed. The Pearson’s correlations and linear regression equations were calculated. Results The strongest relations appeared between attitudes, high health value and high benefits, (r = 0.722 and 0.712 for enriched foods, and 0.664 and 0.693 for cholesterol-lowering foods), and between high health value and high benefits (0.814 for enriched foods and 0.758 for cholesterol-lowering foods). The conceptual models based on linear regression of relations between attitudes and all other variables, considering or not the familiarity with the foods, were developed. Conclusions The positive attitudes and declared consumption are more important for enriched foods. The beliefs on high health value and high benefits play the most important role in the purchase. The interrelations between different variables may be described by new linear regression models, with the beliefs in high benefits, positive attitudes and familiarity being most significant predictors. Health expectations and trust to functional foods are the key factors in their choice.
Psychological factors, such as anxiety, fatigue or stress, may influence the course of pregnancy and lead to spontaneous abortions. Psychological comfort is advised to increase symptoms regression and successful termination of pregnancy. The study aimed to evaluate the intensification and characteristics of anxiety in women with symptoms of imminent abortion and to analyze the relationship between anxiety and obstetrical complications. 30 pregnant women hospitalized with the diagnosis of imminent abortion symptoms were enrolled in the study as the group. Another 30 women with normal pregnancy were the control. Authors made use of the Cattell Personality Factor Test by K. Hirszl and The Self-Reported Anxiety Scale by C.D. Spielberg, R.L. Gorsucha and R.E. Lushene. High level of anxiety that accompanies symptoms of imminent abortion is believed to be a secondary risk factor for preterm pregnancy termination.
Background. Youth nutrition and their nutritional status are conditioned by many factors, some of the main ones being: economic, social, climatic, cultural, and psychological factors as well as nutritional knowledge. With the growing problem of overweight and obesity among children and young people, the incidence of the metabolic syndrome is also increasing. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of demographic, sociological and psychological factors on the incidence of obesity among 17–18-year-old adolescents from Wroclaw and vicinity as a major risk factor for the development of the metabolic syndrome. Material and Methods. The study was conducted in three upper-secondary schools in Wroclaw, Poland. In the surveyed group (17-18 years old, n = 269) girls accounted for 59.5% and boys constituted 40.5%. Majority of young people were Wroclaw citizens (72.9%). Centile charts elaborated by the Children’s Memorial Health Institute were adopted for the evaluation of anthropometric parameters. Evaluation of the impact of non-dietary factors on the manner of nutrition was carried out using own questionnaire. Results. Based on the tests, abdominal obesity was determined among 34.5% of adolescents aged 17 years and among 65.5% of these aged 18 years. Obesity was more common in girls carrying genetic burden of the disease. Youth with the largest waist circumference most often declared to use slimming diets - 6.7%, and the lowest hunger sensation in stress - 3.4%. In addition, 30.5% of the adolescents with the smallest waist circumference and 11.5% with the largest waist circumference declared to be non-smoking. Occasional alcohol consumption was declared by 30.1% of young people with the smallest waist circumference, and 13.4% with the largest waist circumference. Conclusions. Youth with abdominal obesity significantly more likely than those with normal waist circumference applied slimming diets. Significant impact on the formation of abdominal obesity among girls had inherited disease burden.
Background. Sedentarism and Physical Activity (PA) are considered main components of people’s lifestyle and key indicators of health. Although they can be seen as opposite life conducts that reduce each other’s effects on health, no study has yet clarified the nature of their relation. However, both behaviors can be influenced by similar psychological, social, and environmental constructs. Material and methods. We selected 480 students (272 boys, 208 girls) from middle schools in the metropolitan area of Monterrey (Mexico), who filled in questionnaires on PA behaviors and social-environmental correlates through an online system. Results. Our outcomes highlighted overall low PA levels. Further, girls are more affected by their social environment, whereas physical environment barriers represent a fitting predictor of boys’ PA. Regardless of gender, PA engagement seems to be significantly determined by the level of enjoyment of sedentary behaviors. Conclusions. These results can help professionals in PA and health create gender-specific interventions targeting to raise youth’s PA levels by means of enhancing psychosocial and contextual features. Due to the lack of studies on psychological factors related to sedentary behaviors, our results could arouse attention on this issue and promote further research to better understand the processes beneath it.

Aggressive behaviors in domestic cats (Felis catus) Behavioral issues of cats include: furniture scratching, aggression, anxiety, over-stimulation, exaggerated vocalizations and excreting outside the litter box. Among these, aggression - both passive and active – is the most commonly encountered problem. Aggressive behavior is a complex phenomenon, dependent on both genetic and environmental factors. Among the factors leading to agonistic behavior two categories are distinguished: psychobiological factors (which include biochemical and physiological processes, disposition and mood, emotional reactions, motor actions and vegetative reactions) and environmental factors (such as incorrect socialization, unfriendly surroundings or irresponsible animal owners) . The most widespread type of aggression in cats reared in groups is linked to the desire to gain and maintain their territory. Another type of agonistic behavior is one born out of fear, exhibited by cats in a crisis situation once there is no escape route, and the animal is certain it has to fight to survive. This behavior differs from others in that aggression is here the last resort and not the first response to a disturbing situation. Another source of aggression may be anxiety caused by a sudden change in the environment, the presence of people and other animals. An interesting type of aggression linked to the natural hunting sequence of cats is aggression during play, which especially affects cats during adolescence. While working with an aggressive animal, a caregiver has a range of different mitigating and calming measures at hand, but their proper selection requires experience and cooperation with a veterinarian and a behaviorist).
Psychological factors such as motives, personality and attitudes towards food and nutrition have been reviewed, and shown to essentially influence nutritional behavior. Even rational motives, like the wish to be healthy and slim, may result in eating disorders, especially in orthorexia and anorexia nervosa. Both the effect of ingested food on emotional status and the effect of emotions on food choice have been demonstrated. The results of research on consumer attitudes towards transgenic, functional, ecological and unfamiliar foods have been presented. The improper attitudes towards various forms of food and eating have often resulted from unfamiliarity of foods (neophobia) or their effects on health (functional food). The results obtained show that the knowledge of consumers’ motives and attitudes is an important factor permitting the food producers to implement the best marketing strategy to increase sales, as well as allowing the dietetics and physicians to asses the risks of development of eating disorders and to change them into healthy attitudes.
