Background. The widespread and increasing occurrence of obesity, hypertension and associated disease has necessitated serial testing in order that risks of contracting such conditions become minimised through appropriate therapy and prevention. Many studies report that nutritional factors significantly affect the aetiology of hypertension and obesity that include mineral uptake. There are only a few studies however which are focused on the body’s changing mineral content during pharmaco-therapeutic treatment. Objectives. To determine concentrations of minerals in the hair and urine of hypertensive patients in conjunction with assessing their nutrition. Material and Methods. Subjects were 17 patients presenting with essential hypertension and 18 healthy controls. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was used to measure Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn and Cu in the hair and urine on a Zeiss AAS-3 instrument. Dietary mineral intakes were assessed by interview over 24 hours prior to the analysis. Results. The hypertensive group had significantly lower urine concentrations of Ca and Mg as well as Mg and Zn in hair. Urinary zinc excretion was significantly increased in this group compared to controls, but dietary intakes of Cu were reduced. The dietary mineral intakes were found to be unrelated to the concentrations of such minerals in the hair and urine. Conclusions. Compared to controls, excretion of Ca and Mg were reduced in hypertensive subjects, whereas Zn excretion was higher, and Mg and Zn were relatively low in the hair. Daily dietary intakes of Cu were also reduced in the hypertensive.
The aim of this work is to study the effect of drug mebikar on the clinical manifestations of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis. The study involved 34 patients with cirrhosis of different etiologies. The average age of the examined patients was (48.5±0.9) years, that prevailed patients of working age, indicating the medical and social significance of the problem of early diagnosis and adequate treatment of cirrhosis. One of the most frequent complications of cirrhosis is hepatic encephalopathy. In addition to conventional clinical and laboratory findings in patients with liver cirrhosis, severities of hepatic encephalopathy were determined according to West-Haven criteria before and after treatment. In patients with liver cirrhosis was established the presence of latent or clinically expressed hepatic encephalopathy. The treatment of the control group of patients consisted of the following drugs: essential phospholipids, mixture of sorbitol and major ions, arginine glutamate, furosemide, verospiron, lactulose, amoxicillin trihydrate and lansoprazole. In the complex treatment of the main group of patients medicine mebikar was administered additionally. Analysis of the clinical manifestations of hepatic encephalopathy showed a marked improvement in patients who received additional treatment with mebikar. Specifically, the incidences of mood changes as well as anxiety decreased in this group on average of 38% compared with those patients without an additional treatment with mebikar. Also, sleep disturbances in the main group was observed to be lower by 7.2% compared to those in the control group. Inclusion in the treatment of patients with liver cirrhosis, the drug mebikar – a daytime tranquilizer with anxiolytic properties reduces neurotic disorders, improves emotional state which may indicate a regression in the manifestations of hepatic encephalopathy thereby improving the quality of life of patients and thus substantiating an expedient inclusion of mebikar an anxiolytic drug to the complex therapy of patients with liver cirrhosis.
The paper presents the problem of the financial access to medications and possibilities to improve the situation. One of the possibilities is the legal practice of parallel import. The problem of differences in medication prices is vital, for they are substantial between various countries. The paper points out that efforts to enable patients to take efficacious medicine, regardless of the place of residence, are necessary.
Stroke is a major cause of adult disability that poses an enormous healthcare burden. Effective pharmacotherapy for stroke remains an unmet need. Development of restorative therapies has been identified as a potential alternative in stroke. Emerging understanding of brain repair and plasticity mechanisms have revealed therapeutic targets including inhibition of axonal sprouting (e.g., Nogo, MAG), altered perilesional GABA and glutamate receptor signaling, endogenous neurogenesis and angiogenesis. The main advantage with restorative therapies is the delayed treatment after acute necrotic cell death, when patients are stable. In addition, restorative therapies can be combined with intensive rehabilitation and medication for poststroke complications to further facilitate recovery process. The problem with patient studies is, however, that many pharmaceutical companies have scaled down their stroke programs, because of failures with neuroprotective compounds. We should convince industry that restorative drugs target completely different mechanisms with extended therapeutic time window offering an attractive approach to help stroke patients.

Plasmapheresis in the treatment of trichinellosis

84%
Four patients with severe form of trichinellosis were treated with plasmapheresis. We noticed clinical improvement and favourable alterations in laboratory profiles (morphology and immune response parameters in the bood). The effect of plasmapheresis therapy in patients with trichinellosis was considered beneficial. No major complications of plasmapheresis were observed.

The main reason responsible for the presence of contaminations such as heavy metals in plant products is increasing environmental pollution. As a consequence of contamination, the elements penetrate the plant and animal world as well as food and drugs. The presence of heavy metals was traced in all the investigated herbal preparations, the highest levels being found in tea bags, slightly lower – in granulated teas and gels for difficult teething. The passage of the metals to tea bags varied from 1% to 35%. Many of the investigated preparations cannot be recognized as safe as regards the levels of heavy metals, especially in relation to young children.

Pesticides are a group of synthetic compounds introduced to biocenosis as a result of intentional human activity. Due to their long-lasting presence in the soil, the ability to spread as well as resistance to technological processes, the remains of pesticides can transfer to the human organism, where they cause acute and chronic intoxication. Organochlorine pesticides have been identified in herbal preparations, and especially in herbal and herbal-fruit teas in bags as well as in their infusions. The most commonly identified residues of pesticides found in these preparations include HCH, aldrin, DDE and DMDH. The percentage extraction of organochlorine pesticides is differentiated and ranges from 3 to 95.1.
