The aim of this study was to test a hypothesis that a longer duration of isometric contraction is related to an increased oxygenation status of the muscle. A group of trained rock climbers and untrained subjects performed 15 kp sustained isometric contraction until fatigue set in. The oxygenation status was assessed using near infrared spectroscopy (ISS, USA). The results support the hypothesis. The concentration of relative oxygenated hemoglobin was higher in the rock climbers than in the untrained subjects. The relative total hemoglobin did not differentiate the two groups enough to show that blood volume also strongly influences contraction time.
One of the preconditions of effective anticancer therapy is efficient transfer of the therapeutic agent (chemotherapeutic) to tumor cells. Fundamental barriers making drug delivery and action difficult include underoxygenation, elevated interstitial pressure, poor and abnormal tumor blood vascular network and acidic tumor milieu. In this study we aimed at developing an optimized scheme of administering a combination of an angiogenesis-inhibiting drug (vasostatin) and a chemotherapeutic (cyclophosphamide) in the therapeutic treatment of mice bearing experimental B16-F10 melanoma tumors. We report that the strongest tumor growth inhibition was observed in mice that received two, three or four vasostatin doses in combination with one injection of cyclophosphamide (i.e., V2 + CTX, V3 + CTX or V4 + CTX schemes). Double administration of vasostatin increases oxygenation of B16-F10 tumors. On the other hand, its five-fold administration lowers tumor oxygenation, breaks down tumor vascular network (increasing hypoxia) and leads in consequence to death of cancer cells and appearance of necrotic areas in the tumor. A decreased cyclophosphamide dose in combination with two doses of vasostatin (V2 + CTX scheme) inhibits tumor growth similarly to a larger dose of cyclophosphamide alone.
W pracy przedstawiono porównanie wpływu niestabilności potencjału katody na pomiar gęstości strumienia tlenu metodą amp ero metryczną, z wpływem niestabilności szerokości przedziału całkowania na tę wielkość, wyznaczaną metodą woltamperometryczną. Błąd powodowany niestabilnością przedziału całkowania jest mniejszy niż błąd spowodowany niestabilnością potencjału katody. The aim of the study was to optimize the temperature, pH and oxygenation state for the aerobic biodegradation of vinasse using a mixed culture of thermo- and mesophilic bacteria of the genus Bacillus. At the initial stage of the study a series of experiments was performed in shake flasks over the temperature range of 30 to 65°C and an initial pH of the medium ranging between 5.40 (the pH of vinasse) and 9.5 in order to determine the optimal values of the two parameters (T = 58°C, pH = 8.35) and thus maximize the extent of COD reduction (60.88%). At the subsequent stage, with the optimal values of temperature and initial pH, batch biodegradation processes were conducted in an STR with aeration at 1.0 vvm and two stirrer speeds, 550 rpm and 900 rpm, which provided a reduction in COD of 77.56% and 76.48%, respectively. With 900 rpm, a concomitant rise in the biodegradation rate was observed. The extent of COD reduction increased to 85.37% when biodegradation was conducted at 58o C (optimal temperature) and a stirrer speed of 900 rpm, the pH being maintained at 8.35 throughout the process.
Test was done on Arkonka underground water intake. To perform it, it was constructed the model station composed of the closed gravity filter, oxygen supply system, water supply system and a mixer. For needs of the experiment it was determined the iron reduction degree, manganese reduction degree, pH determination, determination of the oxygen contents in treated water. The above determinations were to be helpful in analysis of that innovatory technology. The background for the comparison were the results of the above determinations for the aeration – filtration technological line in use on Arkona water intake. That comparison comprised the analysis of the reductive effectiveness of the particular methods with the comparison of the costs of their industrialscale operation.
Przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczące pomiarów gęstości strumienia tlenu (OFD) w dwuelektrodowym symetrycznym układzie elektrod platynowych i stalowych. Krzywe woltamperometryczne uzyskane w różnie natlenionych roztworach wskazują na możliwość eliminacji elektrody porównawczej.
The influence of oxygenated diesel fuel containing n-butanol on a passenger car exhaust emissions was tested over the NEDC transient cycle. The tests showed that a diesel fuel/butanol blend, containing 10% of n-butanol, caused a significant decrease in PM and smoke emissions, had no effect on NOx and CO2 emissions and brought about higher CO and HC emissions. The most favourable fact resulting from the butanol application as diesel fuel component is that it produces desirable changes in PM/NOx trade-off.
The study is concerned with the course of sorption of Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺ and Mn²⁺ ions and with their washing, out with distilled water in sandy, loess, and loamy soils. Sorption was conducted according to the idynamic method. ODR and Eh were measured as indices of soil oxygenation. It was found that oxygen deficiency of the soils under study, with a change in their reaction from acid to neutral, resulted in: 1. an increase in the sorption of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions, 2. an increase in the sorption of Mn²⁺ ions in the loamy soil only.
