Samples of peanuts, hazelnuts and walnuts were covered with a pullulan coating prepared from 10% anhydrous solution of pullulan. The pullulan was obtained from a batch culture of a white mutant of Aureobasidium pullulans B-1. Over 90 days of nuts storage at a room temperature, analyses were carried out for changes in the acid and peroxide numbers of fat extracted from the nuts, as well as for changes in nut mass loss. The pullulan coating applied was found to exert a positive impact on the reduction of physicochemical changes occurring in the stored nuts. It inhibited processes of hydrolytic rancidity and oxidation of fat of the nuts. It had especially beneficial effect on walnuts, in which it inhibited the negative changes in lipids over the entire storage period. It was also observed that mass losses of the coated nuts were smaller and occurred in substantially shorter time span as compared to the uncoated nuts.
Many seed lots of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) nuts are characterized by various levels of infection with pathogenic fungi, such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and Cylindrocarpon spp. Favourable conditions for fungal infection of beechnuts are created especially during their long-term provisional storage without earlier drying to the moisture content of 8-10%. Strongly infected seed lots are not suitable for long-term storage. During the pre-sowing treatment of seeds by stratification without medium, fungi develop under the moist conditions and infect many healthy seeds. To assess the quality of beechnuts, a vigour test has been developed. Seeds removed from the pericarp (4 replications of 50 nuts each) are placed in boxes between two layers of moist tissue paper and incubated at 25°C for 120 hours. After this period decayed seeds (mouldy seeds) are excluded, and the remained are subjected to embryo viability by the tetrazolium test. When the percentage of decaying seeds (including those with necroses) does not exceed 10-15%, such seed lot can be used for long-term storage. If the percentage exceeds 50%, the seed lot should be considered unsuitable both for storage and for pre-sowing treatment, because only a very small proportion of seeds will emerge in the nursery.

Physical properties of wild mango fruit and nut

67%
Physical properties of two wild mango varieties were studied at 81.9 and 24.5% moisture (w.b.) for the fruits and nuts, respectively. The shape and size of the fruit are the same while that of nuts differs at P = 0.05. The mass, density and bulk density of the fruits are statistically different at P = 0.05 but the volume is the same. The shape and size, volume and bulk density of the nuts are statistically the same at P = 0.05. The nuts of both varieties are also the same at P = 0.05 in terms of mass and density. The packing factor for both fruits and nut of the two varieties are the same at 0.95. The relevant data obtained for the two varieties would be useful for design and development of machines and equipment for processing and handling operations.
The crude phenolic extracts were obtained from red bean, adzuki bean, red lentil, green lentil, broad bean, faba bean, field bean, vetch, buckwheat, buckwheat groat, hazelnuts, walnuts, and almonds using 80% (v/v) acetone. The tannin fractions were separated from the crude extracts using Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography with ethanol and 50% (v/v) acetone. The tannin fractions were characterised by colour reaction with vanillin/HCl reagent and ability to bovine serum albumin (BSA) precipitation. The yield of extraction of phenolic compounds ranged from 3.77% (buckwheat) to 17.20% (walnuts). The content of tannin fraction in the crude extracts was differentiated and ranged from 10.5% (faba bean) to 45.5% (broad bean). The tannin fraction from buckwheat possessed the highest content of tannins determined using vanillin method (1.04 absorbance unit at 500 nm/mg) whereas the lowest content was noted for broad bean (0.066 absorbance unit at 500 nm/mg). In the model system, the highest amount of BSA was precipitated by tannin fraction of hazelnuts, whereas the lowest was noted for adzuki bean.
This paper presents the results of the research on the anatomical structure of the stems and leaves and on the sculpture of the nuts of the sedges from section Muehlenbergianae (L.H. Bailey) Kük. The results show, that the anatomical structure of the vegetative organs cannot be an effective criterion of a taxonomical division. The most important interspecific differences occur among shapes and size of the exocarp cells, and among the presence or absence of the silica bodies on the surfaces of the cells. The greatest variation in the features listed above is observed in Carex divulsa Stokes subsp. leersii (Kneucker) W. Koch.
The fatty acid composition of waste products of Pistacia vera (pistachio tree) grown in Turkey was assayed. The waste products and various parts of the tree were classified as fresh leaves (FL), dried leaves (DL), stem (ST), branches, fresh skin of natural woody shell (unprocessed) (FSN), fresh kernel, and skin of processed woody shell. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry data showed FSN, FL, DL and ST to be rich sources of fatty acids. In particular, FL contains a remarkable amount of linolenic acid (30.4±3.28%).
