The leaf morphology of Buxus hyrcana (Pojark.), shade-tolerant and evergreen species growing in understorey of Caspian Forest was studied in five natural Iranian populations in order to recognize the pattern of within- and among-population variation of selected leaf morphological traits. Fifteen traits were selected and measured or calculated – list in Appendix. Leaves were collected from different geographical (between 36°13′N and 53°15′E) populations of B. hyrcana growing in the Caspian Forests located in Mazandaran Province (northern Iran) in the similar vegetation and site conditions but on different altitudes. Ten mature trees from five relatively small areas (0.5–1 ha) were selected in June. Then ANOVA model was used with both crossed and nested effects. The results showed that variation among the populations was significant in 13 of 15 traits (P <0.05); variation among the trees in the population was significant in 14 of 15 traits (P <0.05). Among all characters measured, the greatest plasticity was found for weight, leaf area mass and specific leaf mass. Function 1 explained 30% of the total variance and Function 2 represented another 17% of the total variance. PCA analysis showed that the most important role in function 1 allocated to width of lamina and leaf figure ratio (length of lamina/width of lamina) and in function 2 to top of leaf figure (width of lamina in 0.1 its length/width of lamina). The results of the average linkage clustering method evidenced four distinct clusters. Generally, morphological traits of leaves of B. hyrcana showed low variation among the considered populations based on clustering analysis, although some trees inside the population showed significantly different values in comparison with other trees.
Litter production is essential for transfer of energy and nutrients from plant to soil. This paper aims to relate the phenology of litterfall by common oak (Quercus robur L.) to specific climatic factors. Over three years, two natural stands of Quercus robur (Cerceda with latitude 43°11’N and longitude 8°28’W and Lourizán with latitude 42°25’N and longitude 8°40’W) near to fifty years old and located in Galicia, Northwest of Spain, were thoroughly studied in the period 1992–1994. The litter was collected in five litter traps (0.5 m wide, 20 cm high) located within a plot of 100 m². Annual litterfall values were similar in both stands, being approximately between 6 and 11 Tm·ha⁻¹ (dry weight); the southern stand showed a higher interannual variability. The leaf fraction accounted for the highest percentage of total litter production. Usually it represents more than 70% of annual production, but it has been exceeded by fruits production in the corresponding season (spring in the north and summer in the south). The climatic parameters that had the greatest influence on litter production were total precipitation and absolute maximum temperature with a correlation always higher than 65%. It allows to link litter production with climate parameters with an adjusted correlation coefficient around 70 %, even more in the south plot (Lourizán). With an easy ANOVA analysis it is possible to distinguish the season with greater litter production; it is the autumn in all cases except fruits production as was said above.
This paper presents results of research, conducted in the years 1999-2004, on the influence of cultivation conditions – light exposure and plant top-dressing – on the blooming of woodbine Lonicera periclymenum L. Seven features of the course and rate of blooming were investigated. Cultivation in twilight and using ammonium phosphate as plant top-dressing, among the experimental factors used, were the most profi table to ornamental values con-nected with blooming.
During the years 2007–2008 the content of flavonoids and polyphenolic acids in inflorescences of Helichrysum arenarium (L.) Moench was analyzed in specimens from natural stands and plantations. Plants cultivated in experimental plots originated from in vitro plantlets. The amount of flavonoids in inflorescences from experimental plots was higher and attained its maximum at 1.19% compared with 0.84% observed for plants from natural stands. In herbal material collected in 2008 the content of flavonoids was lower. The tendency was not observed for polyphenolic acids. Within the study period their amount ranged over the interval 0.74–2.82%. It was also found that dry mass of inflorescences from natural stands was higher than that for cultivated plants by 30.9%. In contrast, the density of generative shoots was 5.2-fold higher in natural stands. It was shown that Sandy Everlasting plantations could yield up to 3.4-fold more herbal material which is of a better quality (contains more biologically active compounds) than that from natural stands.
Savin juniper (Juniperus sabina L.) is a relict shrub in Poland with only one natural stand in Pieniny Mts. Se- eds require warm followed by cold stratification to overcome dormancy. Application of temperature regime at 20°/3°C layout, for 14 and 17 weeks respectively, is more effective than stratification at 15°/3°C. Interruption of warm stratification phase after 7 weeks and seeds drying at room temperature for 3-days with warm stratification follow-on resulted in increasing of germination capacity from 25% to approximately 45%. Germinated seeds pricked to substrate into containers gave seedlings 3 cm high when cultivated under plastic tunnel in the first vegetation season.
Helichrysum arenarium (L.) Moench is a perennial of the Asteraceae family. The species is partially protected in Poland. Its inflorescence is a source of valuable herbal material. The amount of fresh and dry mass of inflorescences collected from plants growing in natural stands and those obtained from experimental plantations was analyzed. The plants growing in the plantation were obtained from in vitro cultures. Germination ability of achenes was also tested. The number of flowering shoots per plant, the number of plants per area unit as well as the fresh and dry mass of inflorescences depended significantly on the soil conditions and precipitation. Cultivation of H. arenarium gives a significantly higher fresh and dry mass of inflorescences per plant and a higher yield per area unit. The yield of herbal material from a plantation can vastly exceed that from the natural stands. Stratification of achenes prior to their germination resulted in an increase in the number of seedlings by 9.6%. Germination ability markedly decreased with time. Therefore, it is likely that the achenes form a transient seed bank. Achenes from plants obtained by in vitro method exhibited the lowest germination ability, so they should not be used as seed material.
