In the coming years the construction of four motorways is planned in Poland: two motorways running east—west (A-2 and A-4) and two running north—south (A-1 and A-3). In spite of their obvious advantages, motorways have adverse environmental impact too. Busy traffic and higher speeds of motor vehicles result in adverse effects to the environment, bringing about contamination with exhaust gases; there is an extensive spread of toxic agents and also noise emissions. The author discusses pollution of air with toxic fractions of exhaust gases. He also deals with lead contamination of cultivars in orchards along motorways and of tree leaves in roadside compact tree belts.

Environmetalists from all over the world stand for balanced development. In the case of transport, this means a system of balanced mobility, in which the movement of people and goods functions from generation to generation, without exhausting the raw materials, energy sources and the environment, which all belong to each generation. That is why public means of transport should prevail. The very nature of the mass motorization of society contradicts sustainable development. Quoting a Greenpeace report, the author provides evidence that no human activity pollutes the environment to the same degree as the use of automobiles.

An increase in prices of public transport fees in Poland outpaces the inflation rate considerably. That is why the number of train and bus passengers dwindles, while more cars ply on the roads. It is commonly believed that subsidies for public transport are high and they will have to increase. The author argues that subsidies for individual motor transport are actually higher than those for public transport. Thus, in his opinion, dwelling on public transport costs only should stop and instead an evaluation should be made of costs involved in individual motor transport.

Motor vehicles are a significant source of pollution of the natural environment. To reduce its adverse effects lead-free petrol and catalytic converters are gradually introduced on an increasing scale. Because of high costs, implementation of these measures will take a long time. In short term, quantities of toxic combustion products can be reduced by lowering fuel consumption. The article presents the factors which affect consumption of liquid fuels (technical, operational, road and traffic factors as well as driving style). Thus, reduction in liquid fuel consumption by motor vehicles will result in a decrease in fuel expenses, and above all, it will abate pollution of the natural environment, particularly in urban centres.
