The article presents a case of a newborn foal (32 hours of life) with an acute abdominal pain. The foal was sent to the clinic after 24 hours of conservative treatment in the field. Physical examination revealed acute obstruction of the small intestine. The patient was admitted for emergency surgery. General multimodal anaesthesia with endotracheal tube placement and oxygen supplementation was performed. During medial laparotomy, about one meter of necrotic small intestine was resected, and the right ovary was removed. This surgical procedure was performed under general infusion multimodal anaesthesia with intratracheal administration of a mixture of oxygen and air. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, and no complications were observed. During the 5-month observation period, no disturbances in the somatic development and general condition of the patient were found.
Clotting disturbances are well documented in veterinary medicine and associated with bleeding caused by damage of coagulate cascade. Homeostasis is defined as the equilibrium between coagulation and fibrinolysis. It is a complicated physiological process protecting the organism against blood loss. As a result of new immunological technology with high specific and sensitive markers it is possible to detect products of fibrynolysis activation, such as D-dimers. Veterinary literature has published very little about the efficacy of various D-dimer test in dogs and horses in diagnosing and evaluating the increase in fibrynogen degradation products. It has been proven that completing standard parameters (pulse, respiration, PCV and anion gap) estimated in horses with colic by using the D-dimer test as well as assessing the activity of phospolipase A₂, the animal’s life expectancy prognosis is radically improved. Because homeostatic cascade activation occurs due to many clinical causes e.g.: injury, chirurgical operation, neoplasm, heart diseases, pregnancy and in the postpartum period, it seems theoretically reasonable to apply the D-dimer test in order to access early diagnosis of life-dangerous abnormalities such as circulative thrombi in blood vessels.
Colics in horses are a common problem, which can be life-threatening for the animal, depending on the type and severity of the disease. The case described in this article concerns surgically treated intramural hematoma of the jejunum in a 3-year-old Arabian mare. Medial laparotomy was performed in dorsal recumbency under general anesthesia. During the exploration of the abdominal cavity, highly filled intestinal loops were found along with intramural hematoma located in the jejunum. A resection of the intestinal part with extravasation was performed, and the content of the small intestine was evacuated. The postoperative treatment consisted of intravenous and general antibiotic therapy as well as intensive fluid therapy for the next 5 days. The abdominal cavity was flushed two times a day with a warm physiological solution containing heparin. After 3 days the drain was removed. After the treatment the mare returned to full health.
The aim of the study was to present clinical observations regarding the reposition of uterine torsion in pregnant mares. Treatments were performed in 10 mares hospitalized with a diagnosis of uterine torsion in the period from the 8th to the 11th month of pregnancy, including one mare treated during delivery. In 4 mares, obstetric examination revealed the presence of dead fetuses. In one mare admitted during labor, Kamer’s repositioning technique was applied by inserting a hand through the vagina into the uterus. In all other cases, mares underwent surgical repositioning after laparotomy performed in linea alba. In 4 mares, in which the uterine wall was at risk of rupture during handling because of advanced changes, a caesarean section was performed before repositioning. Eight out of the 9 mares survived treatment and recovered without complications. One of five mares in which live fetuses were left, miscarried, while the other four delivered healthy foals. Uterine torsion reposition by midline laparotomy offers the best possibilities for inspecting the abdominal cavity, including the uterus, and for detecting any other abnormalities of the digestive system. In the case of mares in which fetuses were left, spontaneous delivery had no adverse effect on the healing of the wound.
