Onchocerpa lupi was first isolated from a wolf in Russia. Since then, canine ocular onchocercosis has been increasingly reported, particularly in Europe and the United States. It is thought that blackflies and midges are the vectors of transmission, and it is possible that these vectors could transmit the parasite to humans. The first human case of O. lupi in Turkey was reported in 2011. In this report we present the third human case of O. lupi infection in Turkey. Our patient was a 28-year-old male who displayed a painless, immobile mass under the conjunctiva. The mass measured 10 × 12 mm in size. Pathological examination of the surgically excised tissue was suggestive of infection by a filarial nematode. Subsequently, the parasite was identified as O. lupi through molecular analysis. All of the previously reported cases of O. lupi in both humans and dogs were more symptomatic than in our patient, Onchocerca infection should not be ruled out during the differential diagnosis of the subconjunctival and orbital cystic mass in instances where there is little to no inflammation. It is important to consider biopsy and carry out molecular analysis to identify the parasite.
The localisation and activity of D glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase) and alkaline phosphatase (AlP) in the trophozoites of Balantidium coli isolated from pig intestine content were investigated using ultrastructural and cytochemical methods. The activity of G-6-Pase was demonstrated on the membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum, particularly in the cortical part of the trophozoites. In addition, the product of the reaction to G-6-Pase was concentrated in the vesicular structures, which were distributed along the reticular membranes. These structures were described as vesicles similar to glycosomes, containing enzymes of glycogenolysis. It is very likely that hydrolases in B. coli are formed on the rough reticular membranes without the involvement of cisterns of the Golgi complex. The ultrastructural deposits of the reaction to G-6-Pase and AlP in the trophozoites of B. coli described here indicate that some membranes of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and small vacuoles with a strong reaction to these enzymes can play a similar role to the Golgi complex.
Twenty five women (21 to 50 years old) with genetic diseases (phenylketonuria, Down’s syndrome, achondroplasia, epilepsy), patients of the II Maxillo-Facial Surgery Clinic of the Medical University of Warsaw, were examined for the pre-treatment status of the oral cavity and the occurrence of oral protozoans, Entamoeba gingivalis and/or Trichomonas tenax. On the basis of the clinical characteristics and light and transmission electron microscopic examination, relationship between periodontal condition and presence of the oral protozoans were analysed and factors which may play the main role in the maintenance of the infection in these patients were determined. The highest prevalence of infection with E. gingivalis and T. tenax was noted in the 41-50 year age group in which more than 88% of the patients were infected. In 11 among of 20 of the cases with periodontal disease, infection with T. tenax, and/or E. gingivalis occurred. In 10 among of 16 of the individuals with limited mobility the oral protozoans was present. Our studies indicate that age as well as limited mobility of the patients examined resulting in difficulties with maintaining of good hygiene of oral cavity may play an important role in occurrence of infection with the oral protozoans and inflammatory processes in gingiva and periodontium.
This is the first record of a mermithid (Nematoda, Mermithidae) parasitic in body cavity of Ixodes ricinus adults collected at two localities in Denmark during 1993-1995. Out of 213 adults 13 were parasitized (females 8.1% and males 3.4%). Up to three mermithid larvae were observed per host. The juvenile mermithids were up to 20 mm long and from their mouth emerged a stylet 70 µm long. The morphology and ultrastructure of the mermithid juveniles was studied with scanning and transmission electron microscopes.
