The toxicity and biological activity of aqueous extracts of herbal medicine Naran N were investigated using human skin fibroblast cells culture (HSF) of 2 x 104 and 1 x 10s cells/ml densities. The herbal drag Naran N is composed of four herbs: Flos Calendulae, Folium Plantaginis lanceolatae, Anthodium Chamomillae, Herba Euphrasiae; it was elaborated in the Department of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Falcuty of Medical University of Lublin (Poland) and distributed on permission ofthe Polish Department of Hygiene (PZH) in 2001. Naran N is produced by Dyspak (Dys near Lublin, Poland) on licence of the Medical University of Lublin (PL-409218-B,). The investigations in the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology of UMCS of Lublin have shown that the aqueous extract of Naran N stimulates the proliferation of HSF cells of 1 x TO5 cells/ml density, the viability of cells remained on the control level. Similar viability was observed also for HSF culture of 2 x 10" cells/ml density. The results explain the healing activity of Naran N for chronic vascular diseases.
Padma 28 is a combination of Tibetan herbs that is very often used in the western medicine. The present standard of modern phytotherapy requires controlled clinical studies to determine the therapeutic value of herbal preparation. In our review we present controlled clinical studies of Padma 28 in patients with intermittent claudication, juvenile chronic arthritis, multiple sclerosis and angina pectoris. In all the studies safety and tolerability levels were very high. We try also to discuss possible mechanisms of activity of this herbal product.
The aim of this study was to determine the amount of water intake of the chinchilla in a day and to check whether addition of herbal formula with an intense aroma and sweet taste to the water will affect the amount of water intake. Based on our experience it can be concluded that there are large differences in daily water intake between individuals in the sample and individual differentiation is the only factor that influenced the occurrence of differences. Other factors such as gender or provision of hay, did not affect significantly (statistically significant) on water intake. Experience has shown that there are highly significant differences in the consumption of water by the same animals before and after addition of the herbal preparation with a sweet taste. However, the addition of compounds, or drugs in the water requires the prior observation of the animal and determine the quantity of water consumed by it, due to the large differences between individuals. The study, which would give the answer if we should continue researching whether the sex, weight, age or other factors can affect the intake of the water by the chinchilla.
The immunomodulatory effect of two preparations from Panax ginseng radix, namely Ginsengcha (granulated mass of radix ginseng) and Ginsengpian (ginseng radix flakes) on mice has been investigated. The examined immune parameters were the following: the production of anti-SRBC antibodies, the chemokinesis of mouse spleen cells and the graft-versus-host reaction induced by mouse spleen cells. Additionally, the influence of ginseng preparations on the angiogenic activity of syngeneic LI sarcoma cells, LI sarcoma tumour growth and tumour blood supply (haemoglobin content) was examined. The production of antibodies was enhanced, particularly in the group with lower control parameters (pcO.OOl). Chemokinesis proved to be augmented (p<0.001) after 10 days of administering ginseng preparations to mice. The ability of mouse spleen cells to produce immunological mediators in the GvH reaction (immunological angiogenesis) turned out to increase significantly (p<0.001) under the influence of Ginsengcha. Neither Ginsengpian nor Ginsengcha stimulated the angiogenic activity of the LI sarcoma cells. Ginsengpian sligtly decreased this activity (p<0.02). The LI sarcoma tumour volume was significantly reduced by Ginsengcha (p<0.05), but no influence on tumour blood supply was observed. Panax ginseng preparations possess immunomodulatory properties and show potent antitumour activity.
The understanding of the pharmacokinetic properties of synthetic drugs as well as herbal preparations used in treatment of many diseases offers a real opportunity to eliminate or minimize the interaction between the active substances. This is of particular clinical importance because it can decrease or increase the action of drugs what is the major cause of failure of pharmacotherapy. Understanding the molecular basis of interaction of substances with enzymes of drug metabolism is extremely helpful in treatment planning and its practical application. The experimental and clinical studies aimed to complete the characterization of the mechanisms of many factors that modulate the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, can provide a lot of evidence guaranteeing the safety of herbal products.
