Effect of herbal mixture in beef cattle diets on fattening performance and nutrient digestibility. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of herbal mixtureaddition in beef cattle diet on daily weight gain, feed utilization and the nutrient digestibility. The study was performed on 16 Limousin bulls during the fattening period from 100 kg to 650 kg of body weight. The animals were divided into two groups: a control (C) and experimental (E) group. All experimental bulls received the same daily rations composed of basal feeds and a concentrate mixture. The experimental factor was a certified mixture of dried chopped herbs (the author's own elaboration): Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea Moench.), garlic (Allium sativum L.), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), caraway (Carum carvi), and liquorice(Glycyrrhiza glabra), given additionally to the rations, in the amount of 3% of the predicted daily dry matter intake. During the study, the feed intake, animal weight gain, feed utilization per 1 kg of body weight gain, and nutrient digestibility were determined.The digestibility study was performed with the indicator method using acid-insoluble ash (AIA) as internal indicator. The addition of herbs improved animals’ performance. Higher daily gains in the experimental group of animals (1194 g/day/animal), compared to those fed without the addition of herbs (982 g/day/animal), were found with simultaneous better feed utilization for 1kg of growth (5.01 kg in the experimental group, 5.94 kg in the control group). Higher apparent protein and fat digestibility coefficients were noted in the animals from the experimental group (by 1.3 and 2.5 percentage points, respectively), compared to the control ones. In conclusion at least a 3% addition of herbal mixture containing Echinacea, garlic, thyme, caraway,and liquoricecan be recommended in beef cattle diet in order to improve thefattening performance. The addition of herbs improves animals’ performance. Higher daily gains in the experimental group of animals, with simultaneous better utilization of feed per1 kgof growth, were found.
DPPH radical scavenging activity for thirty medicinal plant infusions was investigated with a use of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance. Infusions were prepared in similar way in which herbs or herbal teas are prepared directly for human consumption. Samples were obtained mostly from popular and easy available medicinal plants, used as single herbs or in herbal mixtures. The total flavonoid content for fifteen selected plants was measured using modified Christ-Müller method. The best DPPH radical scavenging activity (more than 50% of DPPH radical reduced in examined sample after 1 h) was obtained for Melissae folium (87%), Sambuci flos (81%), Ulmariae flos (79%), Hyperici herba (67%) and Arnicae anthodium (66%). Green tea confirmed to be strong DPPH scavenger among examined plants (65%). The highest flavonoid amounts were discovered for Ulmariae flos (1.5%), Hyperici herba (1.2%), Betulae folium (0.9%). There was no correlation between DPPH scavenging activity and the total content of flavonoids in examined plan material.

This study evaluated the effects of addition of lucerne extract (LE), Artemisiae annuae extract (AAE), and mixed herbal medicine (MHM) into different goat diets on in vitro rumen fermentation and methane production. In addition to the negative control (NC), addition of monensin (MO) served as the positive control (PC). Four ruminally cannulated Nanjiang Yellow goats (45 ± 2 kg liveweight) were used as donors of ruminal fluid. The results showed: 1. compared with NC, addition of all the additives into the mixed grass diet increased propionate concentration (P<0.05). Protozoa numbers and methane production were reduced by addition of all the additives (P<0.05); 2. compared with NC, LE and AAE in the lucerne diet increased propionate concentration (P<0.05). All the additives reduced protozoa numbers (P<0.05). Methane production was decreased by addition of LE compared with NC and PC (P<0.05); 3. addition of LE into the mixed grass-concentrate diet resulted in an increase of the propionate concentration compared with NC and PC (P<0.05). Protozoa numbers were reduced by addition of LE and AAE compared with NC (P<0.05). Methane production was decreased by addition of AAE compared with NC and PC (P<0.05); 4. compared with NC, addition of AAE and MHM into the lucerne-concentrate diet resulted in an increase of propionate concentration (P<0.05). Protozoa numbers were reduced by addition of all the additives (P<0.05). Methane production was decreased by addition of AAE and MHM (P<0.05). In conclusion, addition of LE, AAE and MHM into different diets reduced methane production, increased propionate concentration and decreased protozoa numbers to a certain extent, and the inhibitory effects of the phytogenic products on methane production are more remarkable in the mixed-grass diet. The phytogenic products appear to be promising alternatives to MO in altering in vitro rumen fermentation and reducing methane production in goats.
Urolithiasis is the process of formation of stone in the urinary tract by crystal nucleation, aggregation and retention in the urinary tract. Traditional medicinal plants have been successfully used to overcome urolithiasis. Hence, herbal formulation containing a mixture of plant extracts was prepared and evaluated for the antiurolithiatic activity. This formulation contained alcoholic extracts of fruit of Tribulus terrestris, root of Boerhavia diffusa and leaves of Azadirachta indica Studies were performed in ethylene glycol-induced urolithiasis model using Cystone as a standard drug. Ethylene glycol increases the level of calcium, oxalate and phosphate which are responsible for urolithiasis. The herbal suspension decreased the level of calcium, oxalate and phosphate significantly at doses of 200 and 300 mg/kg when compared to the negative control group. Creatine, uric acid and urea were also decreased significantly at all dose levels. Histopathology has supported these results. The level of LD50 was found to be higher than 2000 mg/kg. Therefore, the prepared formulation has appreciable significant antiurolithiatic activity and is safe for use.
The purpose of presented investigation was to determine the effect of dietary herbal mix­tures (HGT) containing lyophilized garlic bulbs, oregano, common bahu and sneezewort yarrow, knotgrass, purple coneflower and great nettle pot marigold, juniper berries, anise seed and blessed milkthistle, couch grass and leaves of narrow leaf plantain on fatteners growth, feed intake and utilization as well as the morphological picture and some bio­chemical parameters of blood. The experiment was carried out on 120 piglets, divided into 3 equal groups. Group I was fed with a full-dose starter mixture (15-30 kg), then grower (30-65 kg) and finisher (65 kg - slaughter) with premix without antibiotic growth promot­ers (AGP). The animals from group II (AGP) had the same diet as in group I but with AGP (avilamycine) supplement premix. The pig group III was supplied with the feed of group I with a herb mixture (HGT) additive of 30 kg per tone of feed. The herb preparation may constitute a valuable, alternative to AGP additive to balanced feed mixtures regarding ba­sic nutrients, minerals and vitamins in the growing-finishing pig nutrition.
