Taxus baccata L. is a rare species threatenedwith extinction in Greece, as in other parts of Europe. This paper deals with the ecological status of the species in the area of NE Chalkidiki northern Greece, where the species appears in one of the greatest populations of the country. Site, standand yew population characteristics were studied in the area that species occupies. Eleven sample plots were marked, and on each plot, the height and diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured for all yew trees, as well as for all the individuals of the rest tree species, with diameter at breast height greater than 4 cm. Tree vitality of all trees was also estimated according to IUFRO classification. Yew radial growth was studied using tree-ring analysis. Tree natural regeneration was investigated within subplots of different dimensions and according to two height classes. Results showed that yew population occurs in stands dominated by beech, presenting a mean density of 301 trees per hectare, with a total population of 430 trees with DBH above 4 cm. It forms the secondary stand, and dominates in the stand understorey, accompanied with Fagus sylvatica and Ilex aquifolium, while it appears rarely in the overstorey. Yew tree vitality was foundto be quite high, and significantly higher than that of beech. Radial growth of the sampled trees follows a slow and constant annual increment gradually decreasing by tree age. Yew natural regeneration was foundto be relatively low, 1341.8 individuals (seedlings and saplings up to 1 m) per hectare. Management and in situ conservation of the species in the area should focus on species protection measures, andon specific silvicultural treatments for creating favourable conditions for species growth.

The study examines the factors involved in the successful artificial regeneration of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) Karst. by plantation or sowing in wood left behind in mountain forest stands. The issues studied are as follows: regeneration in stumps, trunks and disks (logs); regeneration in wood at various stages of decomposition; regeneration under the stand canopy and on clearings. The work brings a description of technological procedures to ensure success of this regeneration method.
In temperate forest ecosystems, management is one of the most relevant factors that can drive the temporal pattern of species. As species in an ecosystem show susceptibility to stress and disturbance, it is useful to take into account the plant community “compositional dimension”, which derives from species behaviour and ecological attributes and provides information on the mechanisms underlying species assemblages. Taking into account the influence of environmental factors on species diversity and composition, in order to determine the most suitable ecological behaviour type of each species, the research aim was to generate a model for Ostrya carpinifolia coppiced woods (central Italy) that describes forest ecosystem regeneration after coppicing by the assessment of change in the composition of ecological behaviour types. Vascular species cover percentage, field data, soil data, light intensity at the undergrowth, dominant tree layer cover and time since last logging were recorded for 63 plots covering 400 m2 each (20 x 20 m), randomly selected within a set of homogeneous macro-environmental conditions. Low species richness is related to stressing factors (acid soil, high soil skeleton percentage), while high species richness is linked to high light intensity at the undergrowth level due to scarce canopy cover soon after coppicing. The driving forces affecting floristic composition, highlighted through multi-response permutation procedures (MRPP) were light intensity at the undergrowth, regenerative phase, dominant tree layer cover, acidity, presence/absence of outcropping rock or rock fragments and total nitrogen content. Six species groups, each one characterized by homogeneous ecological behaviour, were defined by indicator species analysis (ISA) and tested using bioindication values analysis. Floristic successional change, related to time since last coppicing, turned out to follow an ecological cycling process characterized by cyclical occurrence/disappearance of species belonging to the six groups.
The level of damages in regeneration caused by manual and mechanical technologies under short wood (assortment) and long wood systems of timber harvesting is presented in this paper. Studies were carried out under different physiographic conditions of southern Poland, i.e. mountain regions (Jeleśnia Forest District, Forest Experimental Station in Krynica), submountain regions (Gromnik Forest District), and lowland regions (Krzeszowice Forest District), in coniferous as well as broadleaf stands where final cuttings and selection thinnings were conducted. The lowest damage level was found in mountain stands, and during early thinnings, while the highest level in lowland stands, and during final cuttings. In the case of technologies used under short wood system the level of damages was by 30% higher than in the case of long wood system.
The aim of the study was to state differentiation of unit cost chosen forest works (artificial regeneration, reforestation, overplanting, replanting, wood harvesting, wood extraction, forest protection against wildlife) in different forest districts as well as define factors influencing on unit costs variableness. Another purpose was to state dynamic of the change investigated unit cost in period 2006-2009 and indicate the reasons influencing on their instability. Important factors conditioning unit costs of analyzed forest works are: altitude above sea level, orographical conditions influencing on the work difficulty and the site type of the forest. Regional Directorate of States Forests in Krosno is very good object to examined variableness and conditioning factors of unit costs, because it consists of low, highland and mountain units.
Stands of the Święty Krzyż nature reserve are described on the basis of studies carried out in 1992 and 2002 as well as historical data concerning species composition in 1925. During the period of 10 years the stand in the study area Święty Krzyż 1 maintained characters of the growing up stage and phase of storied structure. Its volume increased from 502 to 542 m3/ha, and volume increment was 10.6 m3/ha/year. The stand in the study area Święty Krzyż 2 underwent transformation from the break up stage and regeneration phase to the growing up stage and phase of multistorey structure. Its volume increased from 201 to 264 m3/ha, and volume increment was 8.0 m3/ha/year. During the period from 1925 to 2002 the percentage of fir decreased from about 80% to 33% (Święty Krzyż 1) and 45% (Święty Krzyż 2), while this decrease during 1992-2002 amounted to 12.5 and 3.1% respectively. Most likely the process of fir decrease will be continued for next ten or twenty years, but due to a relatively abundant fir underwood, after 20-30 years its percentage in ingrowth will be increasing.
W warunkach optymalnych drzewostany te mogą odgrywać ważną rolę gospodarzą a w częściach przygrzbietowych, zwłaszcza w najbliższym sąsiedztwie górnej granicy lasu, zapewniają wypełnienie zadań ochronnych.
The purpose of the paper is to report on the structure and the potential production of tree stands in the belt of dense forest in the locality of Pilsko, which were formed as a result of connecting natural processes with various methods of cuttings. In two stands single cutting harvesting was applied, corresponding to single tree selection cutting (Einzelplenterung in German). In the third stand there was cutting in the form of small gaps which corresponds to mountain selection cutting (Gebirgsplenterung in German). In the control period (1998-2008) the stand volume on two plots, Pilsko 1 and Pilsko 3 increased from 448 to 479 m3/ha and from 237 to 298 m3/ha respectively, however, in Pilsko 2 the stand volume decreased slightly from 401 to 397 m3/ha. The increase in the volume of the stand reached from almost 5 m3/ha in Pilsko 2 to approximately 8 m3/ha per year in the other plots. The stability of the stand is ensured mainly by the presence of trees in the thinnest classes in the lower and medium layer of the stand as well as the continuous process of regeneration. In this context the stand in which cuttings were taken in the past, characteristic of mountain selection, exhibited more beneficial features. All the researched stands exhibited great differences in the age of trees which enabled them to be classified as uneven-aged stands. The age at the breast height diameter of the oldest drilled spruce was 344 years and frequently the encountered specimens of this variety are of the age of 223 and 276 years. The uneven-aged structure of the stands, however, does not simultaneously ensure a complex and stable structure. In order to form, or to maintain, stable upper mountain spruces, which are under partial active protection (outside reservations with total protection) mountain selection cutting, or cutting by a method of group selection, should be recommended. These methods of cuttings ensure the variations within the structure of the stands, which minimises the risk of large-area disintegration.
