The study aimed at determining the hatchability of turkey eggs as related to the shell surfach characteristics (regular shells, rough shells and pigment-spotted shells – group 1, 2 and 3, respectively). A total of 17 590 eggs of Broad-breasted White Turkeys, marked individually, were considered during the peak of the laying season. Shell microstructure was examined of 60 eggs from each group, using a scanning electron microscope while hatchability was estimated based on fertilization rate, percentage of dead embryos and hatching rate (healthy poults only).The main differences between the shells from group 1 and 2 included different size of cuticular plates, thicker crystal layer, thinner palisade and mammillary layers, curved walls of the mammillae, and thicker fibres of the inner shell membrane. Eggshells from group 3 showed a significantly thicker crystal layer and curving fibres of the inner shell membrane compared to group 1 shells.The hatching rate of set eggs was highest (77.15%) in group 1. Embryo mortality rates were by 4.9 and 5.4 per cent points higher in eggs from groups 2 and 3, respectively, than in eggs from group 1.The hatchabilities of rough-shelled eggs (group 2) and eggs with pigment spots (group 3) appeared lower than of eggs with regular shells (group 1).
The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of various disinfectants on Salmonella enteritidis inoculated on eggshells. The contaminated eggs were treated with two different disinfectant solutions (benzalkonium chloride (BAG) and benzalkonium chloride / gluteraldehyde combination (BAC/G)) for 5 and 15 minutes. Following the treatment and storage at room temperature, the shells and their content were examined for S. enteritidis on days 7, 14, and 21. The results indicate that S. enteritidis may remain viable on the shells of non-disinfected eggs for a long period of time, and may penetrate into the edible portions of the egg during this period. Treating the eggs with a combination of benzalkonium chloride / gluteraldehyde for 15 minutes may probably safely eliminate the danger of S. enteritidis contamination.

Fossil avian and reptilian eggs and eggshells, from the Cretaceous of Mongolia and USSR (Kazakhstan, Zaisan basin) as well as samples of dinosaurian and the Eocene avian eggshells from USA, China, France and Argentina were studied. Methodological, terminological and biomineralization aspects of eggshell structure are discussed. Considered are different classifications of eggshell according to the structural levels of eggshell matter organization (texture, general histostructure, superficial morphology). Basic types, morphotypes, types of pore system and types of surface ornamentation are the main structural categories employed in the systematic description of fossil material. About 18 groups of fossil eggshells referred to turtles, geckoes, crocodiles, and to 14 “families” or dinosaur and bird oological remains are described. Their composition, occurence, paleobiology and systematics are shortly presented.
The composition of mycoflora in storage rooms, and other rooms in a poultry-processing plant, as well as on the surfaces of egg shells was observed. The concentrations of both aflatoxin B₁ and ochratoxin A were determined in the shell eggs at room temperature and humidity, at a higher temperature and humidity, and in the eggs previously contaminated by Aspergillus flavus. We found that there was a reciprocal correlation between the presence of microscopic filamentous fungi in the air and on the working tables (Cladosporium spp. 45.5%, Penicillium spp. 36.4%, Mucor spp. 9.0%). The penetration of mycotoxins through the egg shell was relatively low and the residue limit of aflatoxin B₁ allowed (5 μg.kg⁻¹) was not exceeded in any sample of egg tested. However, the residue limit of ochratoxin A (20 μg.kg⁻¹) was exceeded in one case.
The species composition of the Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) prey and its preferences for selected bird species are described on the basis of the egg shells found in the flooded area in the National Park “Ujście Warty” in Western Poland. In the years 2000–2003, during breeding seasons, 1104 shells of 16 bird species were found. The most common species was the Coot Fulica atra (69% of all the shells). The remaining species mainly were: the Mallard Anas platyrhynchos (13%), the Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus (7%), the Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis (4%) and the Garganey Anas querquedula (4%). The number of shells found and the median date when shells were found differed between the years of study. The differences are probably related to the effect of variation in the number and differences in breeding phenology of potential crow’s prey between seasons, which are connected with water conditions occurring in the study area.

Upper Cretaceous amniotic eggs from Gobi Desert

There are described several types of Upper Cretaceous fossil amniote eggs, clutches and eggshells, collected during the Polish-Mongolian Paleontological Expeditions (1963—1971) in several localities of the Gobi Desert. Isotopic ratios of C and О are reported and discussed. The eggs may be attributed to saurischian and ornithischian dinosaurs, and palaeognathous birds. Four types of problematica are also described. Taphonomy and restoration of eggshells’ diffusive properties as compared with modern hard-shelled eggs suggest paleoecological interpretation of the nesting conditions as rather dry for smooth-shelled eggs, humid for ornamented eggs, and very humid for the thickest-shelled eggs. Different nest types are postulated for ornamented and smooth eggs, based on taphonomy and shell parameters.
