The article presents the directions of social and political changes occurred in Orava after 1989. These changes promoted increased activity of the local communities and self-governments. Two Oravian communities: Jabłonka and Lipnica Wielka were investigated in terms of their achievements over the last six years and the directions of their future social and economic evolution.
