The research was aimed at determining whether a pesticide tomb affects the ecological status of drainage ditches located in its vicinity as well as how it affects the diversity of the flora of the ditches and in which direction its effect on the surrounding environment is. In addition, the results of the study are a contribution to a comparative analysis of methods for macrophyte evaluation of watercourses used in Poland and to identify the possibilities of their application in investigations of artificial watercourses under the pressure of pesticides. Values of indices of the hydromorphological evaluation (HQA, HMS) were similar for all drainage ditches examined. This points to a negligible effect of the pesticide tomb on the hydromorphological characteristics of the analyzed watercourses. The pesticide tomb was found to affect the ecological status and floral diversity of the drainage ditches. The lowest values of macrophyte and diversity indices were recorded in the first and the second watercourse, whereas higher ones were in the third watercourse. Changes in the indices of ecological status and those of floral diversity observed in the watercourses examined show that the effect of the pesticide tomb on the surrounding ecosystem is consistent with topographic features and proceeds in a north-easterly direction. Both methods of the macrophyte evaluation of the ecological status of watercourses (MTR, MIR) yield different numeric values, yet their results are comparable in terms of the tendency of changes in the ecological status of the analyzed watercourses. In both methods, the highest rank was reported for the third watercourse. The MTR index diversifies the examined watercourses to a smaller extent than the MIR index. The MIR method is better under conditions of lowland Poland for the evaluation of the ecological status of artificial watercourses, as it enables stronger diversification of the ecological status of the watercourses examined due to a higher number of indicatory species.
Paeonia ostii is known for its excellent medicinal values as Chinese traditional plant. To date, the diversity of culturable endophytes associated with P. ostii is in its initial phase of exploration. In this study, 56 endophytic bacteria and 51 endophytic fungi were isolated from P. ostii roots in China. Subsequent characterization of 56 bacterial strains by 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis revealed that nine families and 13 different genera were represented. All the fungal strains were classed into six families and 12 genera based on ITS gene sequence. The biosynthetic potential of all the endophytes was further investigated by the detection of putative polyketide synthase (PKS) and nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) genes. The PCR screens were successful in targeting thirteen bacterial PKS, five bacterial NRPS, ten fungal PKS and nine fungal NRPS gene fragments. Bioinformatic analysis of these detected endophyte gene fragments facilitated inference of the potential bioactivity of endophyte bioactive products, suggesting that the isolated endophytes are capable of producing a plethora of secondary metabolites. These results suggest that endophytes isolated from P. ostii had abundant population diversity and biosynthetic potential, which further proved that endophytes are valuable reservoirs of novel bioactive compounds.

Diversity of ancient woody species in urban forests

Mostly parks and forest are the most important ‘green islands’ in urban ecological network. Urban forests are belong to green areas and collected many plant species. The main aim of the article was characteristic of ancient plant species in urban forests in Tarnów. The field studies were carried out in years 2011–2012. It covered 80 phytosociological records on the area 500 m2 in herb layer of urban forests and in forest nature on oak-hornbeam. The results showed that many ancient plant species were growing in urban forest but less than in nature reserves.

The paper presents the first finding of Leucocoprinus lilacinogranulosus in Poland, the rare, exotic fungus, sporadically found in Europe. The species was found indoors, on soil in terrarium. A description based on the specimens from Poland as well as photographs and microcharacter drawings are presented.
Incidence of Armillaria root disease and the population structure of associated Armillaria spp. were studied in 5-17-year-old Scots pine plantations in west-central Poland. Two infection centres (1.14– 9.30 ha) in each of three forest districts (Siemianice, Zielonka and Złotów) were intensively sampled. Root collars were examined for mycelial fans, decayed wood, and rhizomorphs. Twenty two isolates of Armillaria ostoyae collected from epiphytic rhizomorphs from 20 living and two dead trees in the six infection centres were identified with somatic incompatibility group. Only one somatic incompatibility group for A. ostoyae was found. Twenty one isolates produced rhizomorphs on oak-wood discs submerged in a sand-forest soil substrate. Isolates from Siemianice formed the smallest rhizomorph networks and those from Złotów the most abundant. There were 16 different genets among 22 isolates of A. ostoyae distinguished by RAPD analysis. Genetic similarity among genets was 25.6–97.5%. The large diversity in A. ostoyae suggests that sexual reproduction may occur in nature more often than expected.
The research aimed at verification of fungi species colonizing phyllosphere of pontic azalea Azalea pontica L. and at comparison of the fungi species composition: – in the natural stand in the Kołacznia nature reserve, – in arboretum collections at Bolestraszyce and Rogów. 600 fragments of healthy, infected and fallen leaves of pontic azalea were collected for mycological analyses. The species forming the largest number of colonies identified from the healthy leaves were: A. alternata, Ph. cyclaminis, E. nigrum, Ph. medicaginis and B. cinerea, from infected leaves: A. alternata, E. nigrum, Ph. cyclaminis, S. fimicola, T. viride and A. phaeospermum, whereas: E. nigrum, A. alternata, S. fimicola, Ph. cyclaminis and B. cinerea were isolated from the fallen leaves, which indicates that a majority of fungi persistently colonize the leaves during vegetation period and damage them, which leads to defoliation. Colonization of pontic azalea phyllosphere in arboreta by more numerous fungi colonies and species than under conditions of natural sites evidences their increased pressure in the arboreta environment.
A total of 69 isolates of yeasts were recorded in the indoor air of the school buildings: 43 in heated rooms and 26 in unheated rooms. Perfect stages prevailed. Fungi isolated in our study belonged to 39 species. These were mostly monospecific isolates although five two-species isolates were noted. Differences in the properties of physiological characters of fungi isolated in both study seasons were observed. As indoor and outdoor air does not mix during the heating season, a specific substrate for prototrophic, non-fermenting yeastlike fungi forms. Acid production allows fungi to dissolve inorganic compounds in building structures and to release needed microcomponents. Abilities to produce carotenoid pigments are clearly promoted in yeast-like fungi living indoor. This may be related to the accumulation of compounds that are indirect stages in the cycle of biosynthesis of carotenoids or a surplus of oxidizing compounds.
Fruit rot of tomato is a serious disease caused by Fusarium species. Sampling was conducted throughout Selangor, Malaysia and fungal species identification was conducted based on morphological and gene encoding translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-α) sequence analysis. Five species of Fusarium were discovered namely F. oxysporum (including F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici), F. solani, F. equiseti, F. proliferatum and F. verticillioides. Our results provide additional information regarding the diversity of Fusarium species associated with fruit rot disease of tomato.
The shallow water benthic fauna was collected in Kongsfjord, West Spitsbergen. Sampling was conducted along two main environmental gradients: vertical gradient (depth 5-50 m) and horizontal gradient (sedimentation regime) along the fjord axis. A small rectangular dredge was used. Altogether 169 taxa were identified and four macrofaunal associations were distinguished. Bottom type and distance from the tidal glaciers seem to be the main factors responsible for species distribution. The Soft Bottom I Association occupying the fine mud of the Kongsbreen glacial bay consisted mostly of Crustacea with high dominance of scavenging amphipod Onisimus caricus. Bivalves prevailed in the Soft Bottom II Association, located further away from the main glacier outflows. The barren rocky shelf, deprived of vegetation by a sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis was inhabited by the Rocky Shelf Association dominated by decapods. The last distinguished association (the Kelp Association) occurred on the hard bottom overgrown with macroalgae. The gastropod Margarites helicinus and amphipods Ischyrocerus spp. made up 60% of the individuals collected there.
