Schizophrenia manifests itself primarily with positive symptoms, negative symptoms and cognitive disorders. Animal models of mental diseases seem to be an important tool in understanding key theories related with pathophysiology of the disorder and are used to assess efficacy of new drugs. References describe four basic groups of animal models of schizophrenia, such as: models created by pharmacological intervention, genetic models, lesion models and models of developmental disorders of primary brain structures. Of the models referred to above, the group of developmental disorder models is particularly noteworthy, as they are primarily easy to use, and the methods are highly sensitive. High scientific value of these models is associated with the neurodevelopmental theory which stipulates that at an early stage of body development, a number of interactions between genetic and environmental factors may affect the development of neurons which may cause disorders of brain cytoarchitecture development.We review six developmental models of schizophrenia in rats (MAM - methylooxymethanol acetate, prenatal stress, maternal deprivation, isolation rearing, prenatal immune challenge and maternal malnutrition) that are all validated by disruption in PPI.

Infections caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato

It is justified to systematically monitor the number of those infected with Lyme disease in European countries and conduct the research on spreading of genospecies B. burgdorferi s.l. in animal reservoirs and vectors. Moreover, it is essential to take action for increasing the society’s awareness of tick-borne diseases prophylaxis. It is very important due to the observed increase in the number and activeness of ticks which leads to the increased risk of infection with spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and other pathogens transmitted by these vectors.
Phomopsis diachenii was isolated from caraway cultivars Konczewicki, firstly in 2006 and next in 2007. Single cultures were obtained from the roots and the stem base of eight six-week-old seedlings and from the stems of two plants with symptoms of necrosis, in the second year of planting. This fungus was isolated from the plant parts superficially disinfected on malt agar medium with an addition 0.01% of streptomycin. The identification of the species was made on PDA medium. The biotic interactions between P. diachenii and S. carvi and other species of phyllosphere fungi of caraway were studied. Interactions among the fungi, i.e. between P. diachenii and one of the fungi representing the studied community, were examined using the biotic series method. The biotic effects of the fungi in dual cultures were evaluated after 10 and 20 days of common growth and were expressed as the individual biotic effect (IBE). It was shown that P. diachenii is a weak competitor because its growth was limited by numerous species of phyllosphere fungi. The obtained results indicated the dominance of biotic activity of P. diachenii over that of S. carvi. It is possible that P. diachenii has a greater ability to survive in the phyllosphere fungal community than S. carvi, causing septoriosis of caraway.
Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) is one of the smallest (about 360 nt) infectious plant agents. It is composed of a single-stranded circular non-coding RNA molecule. In the course of previous passage experiments with two intermediate PSTVd variants I2 and I4, three non-infectious clones (I2-50, I4-37 and I4 VI-17) were found. When inoculated separately as cDNAs on tomato “Rutgers” test plants these variants did not induce any visible disease symptoms and did not produce progeny. The presence of such non-infectious variants raises several questions about their origin and biology and to answer them, mixed co-infections with cDNA copies of two non-infectious variants (I2-50, I4-37) were performed. PSTVd infection was observed in seven out of 30 inoculated plants. The progeny isolated from three separate plants contained novel variants, together with the parental I2 and I4 sequences. It is conceivable that the appearance of repaired PSTVd molecules, clearly capable of cell-to-cell movement leading to the systemic infection, results from recombination events. An analysis of the recombinant molecules and comparison with databases identified the specific sites responsible for the restricted infectivity of the I2-50 and I4-37 PSTVd variants. In parallel experiments in which (+) strand PSTVd infectious transcripts were used, no recombinants were observed, and the original I2-50 and I4-37 non-infectious sequences were not detected in the progeny.
The prevalence of feline lower tract disease, irrespective of cause, has been reported to be approximately 1.5% to 8%. It has been estimated that 10% to 20% of cats with these disorders have urethral plugs or urolithiasis. Most of the small diameter calculi do not produce any problems in animals. However, the larger ones can become lodged in the urethra and obstruction may then ensue. Cats with urethral strictures are more susceptible to becoming obstructed. Abnormalities can develop as a result of repeated past procedures within or around the urethra urinary tract. Subsequently, obstruction can develop in one, two or more segments of the urethra. The occlusions frequently occur in a single segment of the urethra, but sometimes multiple occlusions are present in the same patient. The treatment of elderly cats can be challenging. This article presents the case of a 15-year-old male cat with obstructions in two segments of the urethra successfully treated with surgery. The cat recovered although it required multiple hours of surgery and the post-operative course had been complicated. Surgical treatment of urethral obstruction can be successful even in elderly cats.
A viroid-like disease causing mosaic leaves and dwarfism was found on mulberry plants in Zhejiang, China. Grafting of stems from infected plants onto healthy plants resulted in the same symptoms on the healthy plants. A circular small RNA (Mmd-v RNA1) was isolated from the infected plant leaves and caused identical symptoms after more than two years. Nucleotide sequencing indicated that the Mmd-v RNA1 contains 356 nt (GenBank accession no. NC_011362) without viroid characteristic regions, only sharing 30 nt sequence identity with that of the Cherry small circular viroid-like RNA 1 (isolate cscRNAl.150, GenBank accession no. DQ357628). This description is the first of viroid-like RNA infection of mulberry trees.
The aim of this study was to perform molecular analysis of canine adenovirus 2 (CAV-2) E1B 19K gene fragment isolated from 20 dogs of various breeds (12 males and 8 females aged 1-9 years), with clinical symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, from the Lubelszczyzna region. Nasal swabs were taken from dogs. DNA of CAV-2 was detected using the PCR method in 16 swabs. All PCR products were sequenced, and the obtained sequences were compared with each other and with the sequence of the E1B 19K gene of the CAV-2 strain from an online database of NCBI GenBank: AC 000003. Based on analysis of the obtained sequences, three polymorphic variants of CAV-2 (No.1-3) with homology of 78 - 100% were distinguished. The nucleotide and amino acid sequences of the most frequently represented polymorphic variant, No. 1, differed from the sequences of polymorphic variant No. 2 with one substitution. The nucleotide and amino acid sequence of the E1B 19K gene of CAV-2 AC 000003 differed from the analogous sequences of representatives of variant No. 1 with 44 nucleotide and 19 amino acid substitutions. The small number of nucleotide differences in the E1B 19K CAV-2 gene among the examined own isolates, compared with AC 000003, suggest that the infections in dogs were caused by a relatively genetically stable virus which occurs in eastern Poland.

Telomeropathies: rare disease syndromes

Telomeres are located at the end of the chromosomes. They protect chromosomes from fusion and degradation. Every cell division causes a shortening of the telomeres. A special enzymatic complex called telomerase is responsible for maintaining telomere length in intensively dividing cells, such as epithelial cells and bone marrow cells. The enzymatic complex includes the TERT subunit, which has reverse transcriptase activity, and the TERC subunit, which acts as a template. Other important components of telomerase are the proteins that are responsible for structural stability. Telomerase remains active only in the dividing cells of the body. The rate of telomere shortening depends on many factors including age, sex, and comorbidities. Faster shortening of telomeres is caused by gene defects, which have an impact on telomerase action. Collectively, these are called telomeropathies. Common causes of telomeropathies are mutations in the TERT and TERC telomerase genes. Types of telemeropathies include dyskeratosis congenita, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and aplastic anaemia, among others. Clinical manifestations and prognoses depend on the type and quantity of mutated genes. Diagnosis of telomeropathies is often problematic because they present with the same symptoms as other diseases. So far, no effective therapeutic methods have been developed for telomeropathies. A therapeutic method for patients with bone marrow failure may be the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells. For patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, treatments include immunosuppressive therapy, lung transplantation, or palliative care. In the future, gene therapy may be an effective treatment strategy for telomeropathies. Lifestyle changes may also have a positive impact on the person. Physical activity combined with a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids can decrease the oxidative stress levels in cells and lead to a slower shortening of the telomeres.
