Observations on the aphid number were carried out in the years 2001–2003, simultaneously in four different sites. In each of these three shrubs were marked: of park rose ‘Grandhotel’, rugosa rose, multiflorous rose and five shrubs of border roses of various cultivars. The purpose of these study was to conduct a quantitative analysis of the aphid fauna colonizing roses growing in various types of city green areas. As a result of studies conducted the occurrence of 10 aphid species was found out on the analyzed shrubs. No significant differences were observed in the species composition of aphids colonizing roses growing in various types of city green areas. The studies showed significant differences in the aphid number between the analyzed sites. The road and street sites on the one hand and the road and housing estate ones on the other were most similar regarding the number of aphids.
The effects of different types of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the root inoculation and plant elemental content of lupin (Lupinus albus L.) were investigated in the present study. The growth and development of lupin were examined to determine the species of AM fungi that can help to grow lupin with a high protein content and economic value. In this study, which was carried out as a pot experiment under controlled greenhouse conditions, first the pots were inoculated with Glomus geosporum, Glomus mosseae, Glomus caledonium, Glomus etunicatium mycorrhizal spores and then lupin (Lupinus albus) seeds were sown. The plants were watered with pure water during the experiment. The trial was terminated after a 60-day plant gowing period. In the study, inoculation occurred at lupin roots at rates varying between 13.3 and 30.0%. However, there was no statistically significant difference among the types of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi applied to the plant in the inoculation rate. The examination of the effect of the application of different AM (Glomus geosporum, Glomus mosseae, Glomus caledonium, Glomus etunicatium) spore on the plant development showed that AM inoculation did not have an effect on the lupin development. The effect of AM inoculation on the plant’s nutrient content revealed no significant difference in the content of crude protein, P and K, while demonstrating a significant increase in the sulphur and magnesium content versus the control. The plant content of crude protein varied between 185.6 and 226.5 (g kg-1), phosphorus – 0.61-0.74 (g kg-1) and potassium – 9.6-11.1 (g kg-1). The concentrations of Zn, Cu, B and Mo in lupin did not show statistically significant modifications caused by the inoculation of different types of AM. However, the plant Mn content showed a decrease due to AM inoculation, whereas a significant increase was observed in the Na content after AM inoculation. AM fungi were observed in plant roots after the inoculation with any of the four different types of mycorrhiza. But no positive effects of mycorrhizal inoculation were not observed on crude protein and the uptake of plant nutrients.
Edge to interior gradients in forest ecosystems can influence the species composition and community structure as a result of variations in micro-environment. In this study, the edge effects on stand productivity and plant species diversity were investigated in two adjacent types of forests in central-southern China: Chinese fir adjacent with pine forests and Chinese fir adjacent with broad-leaved forests. A total of 48 sample plots for overstory and 240 sample quadrates for understory in different stand ages were set up. The tree growth parameters were measured in the overstory while the plant species diversity was measured in both overstory and understory of the examined forests. The results showed that DBH (tree diameter at the breast height), tree height and stand volume in overstory increased from the central areas (CA) of forests to the edge areas (EA), and the plant species richness and diversity in understory were greater in EA than in CA. The edge effect was greater in Chinese fir paired with broad-leaved forests than in Chinese fir paired with pine forests. The edge effect decreased in an order as young aged stands > middle aged stands > mature aged stands in the studied forests. The changes in tree growth and species diversity in the edge area compared to the interior were mainly attributed to the alteration of micro-environmental factors such as light density, temperature and moisture. Our results suggest increasing forest productivity and plant species diversity could be achieved by making more edges in the forests.
The research was conducted on four patches of thermophilous oak wood in Białowieża Primeval Forest: A – with a woodstand: oak + approx. 30-year-old hornbeam + hornbeam brushwood; B – with a hornbeam stand formed by natural seed fall after logging (ca. 1920) oaks; C – after logging oaks and replanted (ca. 1965) with pine and oak; D – with a natural low-density oak stand. Species composition and seed bank density were estimated using the seedling emergence method. Seedling emergence was observed over two vegetation seasons. Research demonstrated that: 1) the species abundance of the seed banks depends on canopy cover (A, B approx. 50 species; C, D approx. 70 species); 2) the floristical similarity (Sørensen’s index) of the seed bank and ground vegetation is higher in the undisturbed patch D (0.50) than in disturbed patches (0.30-0.35); 3) species diversity in plots A, B, C, D (H’=12.5; 13.4; 15.5; 16.9) and seed bank density per m2 (432.5; 958.0; 1486.5; 2268.0) are negatively correlated with the degree of patch shading; 4) the average weight of diaspores in the seed banks of shady plots is lower (A, B approx. 0.003 g) than that of sunny plots (C, D approx. 0.08 g); 5) the share of long-lived diaspores increases in patches after logging.
Facultative scavengers often forage on organic wastes from urban dumps. Despite being a major scavenging raptor in many urban areas, studies on Indian subspecies of Black Kites Milvus migrans govinda are very few. We studied the pattern of offal preference by Black Kites foraging in the dumping sites adjoining two major markets of Kolkata, India through cafeteria experiments, where successful foraging events and abundance of foraging Black Kites were recorded. We also carried out questionnaire surveys among 156 meat and fish sellers of 32 markets of this area to assess their offal disposal practice and understand their attitude towards Black Kites. During questionnaire surveys majority of the respondents (77.92%), indicated that Black Kites consume various kinds of offal, particularly chicken offal from garbage dumps of Kolkata. 51.92% respondents opined that Black Kite population has declined in Kolkata, and 41.03% of them believe such decline is due to food scarcity. Still many respondents (64.74%) sell their offal, which reflect their indifferent attitude towards this scavenging raptor. During 'cafeteria experiments, we noticed that foraging kites pick up small pieces of offal from the garbage dumps, particularly chicken, mutton and fish offal (in 15.45 ± 7.749,9.7 ± 4.542 and 9.95 ± 4.951 successful foraging events/h respectively). Energy content (cal/g) of sun-dried samples of each type of offal substances revealed that the energy (calorie) of swine offal was highest followed by beef offal, mutton offal, chicken offal and fish offal. In spite of being energetically rich, beef and swine offal were less selected by Black Kites possibly because they are visibly larger than other offal, thus requires greater handling time and invites higher risk of kleptoparasitism. Successful foraging events were significantly influenced by offal type, but not by months, study sites or by the relative abundance of foraging Black Kites.
The investigation was carried out in greenhouse with tomato cv. ’Cunero F₁’ grown in rockwool, peat and sand substrates with fertigation system without recirculation. In this research nutrient liquid with or without chlorine was tested. The experiment showed no significant differences on the total, marketable and unmarketable yield of plants fertilized nutrient liquid with or without chlorine. The highest yielding of tomato in rockwool, while lowest in sand substrates was detected. The higher weight of one tomato fruit in peat substrate, compare to sand, was observed. Both substrates and kind of potassium fertilizing had no significant effect on the number fruits per plant.
