One of the barriers to be negotiated by Polish economy is to control degradation of the environment and its restoration. It is connected not only with a need of change in majority of currently used technologies but also with rational use of natural resources. To accomplish this purpose, environmental awareness should be awakened which remains fairly low at present. Frequent environmental emergencies caused by ignorance, negligence or even stupidity also testify this fact. The author suggests a comprehensive discussion on how to improve environment quality and on how to solve current problems.

Environmental degradation requires changes in the standard of human ethical principles. Former ethics dealt with the man/man relationship and direct consequences of human actions. Today, it is not enough as activities degrading the environment seldom lead to changes which are visible immediately. Principally, such changes occur considerably delayed, proceed gradually, and sometimes go unnoticed. Environmental ethics has developed under such considerations. The only Polish publication dealing with this subject, by Marek Bonenberg, defines ethics as ”a theoretical basis for taking environmental actions”. The article points outs problems which could supplement and develop this theory.

The upper Silesia, the region in Poland with the highest density of the heavy industry, with its detrimental technology and improper pollution control systems which should prevent excessive amounts of toxic substance discharged to soil, water and atmosphere, represents an exceptionally degraded area. Such a disturbance of the natural conditions results in exposing living organisms beyond their tolerance ranges. The author presents the extent and range of animal tolerance toward environmental changes. He also suggests taking up urgent integrated research.

The spa of Swoszowice is located in the southern part of Kraków, some 9 kilometres from the city centre. It has been renowned for sulphur deposits and mineral health giving water. Sulphur baths have been applied here for 120 years. Rheumatism, limb traumas, skin diseases, and metabolic and nervous disorders have been treated here. Due to its localization at the limits of the Kraków conurbation it is threatened by air pollutants from exhaust gases and by noise.

Hard coal mining generates large amounts of waste. The Wałbrzych region is one area where huge amounts of rock debris are produced. In the Wałbrzych mines, waste rock has been disposed improperly in terms of the natural environment, especially in recent years, and it has contributed to environmental degradation. The author discusses the reasons for this situation.
