In green needles of Pinus mugo the most abundant polyprenols occur as a mixture of prenologues in which the dominant alcohol is built of 16 isoprene units. The characteristic spectrum of polyprenols (prenol-15, -16 and -17) was the same irrespective of the location of plant and of distinct morphological differences observed in the various selected forms of this species. The constant pattern of the polyprenols spectrum was preserved throughout the 2-year life span of needles, although the level of polyprenols was increased 2-3-fold. The polyprenol pattern in Pinaceae family differs from species to species, thus it may serve as chemotaxonomic criterion within this systematic group.
The scale patterns of 6000 cones from one single tree of Pinus nigra Arn. have been examined. Apart from the main Fibonacci pattern with 8 and 13 parastichies, nine aberrant spiral patterns with Fibonacci-type sequences have been found. They are quite rare and occur with different frequencies. The parastichy quotient 8/13 of the prevalent pattern is very close to the golden ratio 0.618. In case of the black pine it appeared that the greater the deviation of the parastichy quotient m/n from 0.618, the rarer the pattern. Similar results obtained for the sample of 1506 cones collected from three individual trees of larch (Larix decidua Mill.) suggest a true correlation between the frequency of a pattern and the deviation of its parastichy quotient from the golden ratio.
The paper presents data on acquisition of conifer cones from 16 seed extraction plants operating on the territory of Poland during four consecutive years from 2009 to 2012. A high variability was observed in provision of seed units to the seed exaction plants related to specificity of a given seed year. During the four analyzed years the most commonly acquired cone was that of Scots pine – above 1.3 thousand Mg, and the most rare were pines of common fir – 31 Mg. The plants that process the largest number of cones are seed extraction plants in forest districts of Jarocin, Kluczbork and Rytel where over 600 Mg of cones were extracted. Conifer cones, which are usually treated as waste, may be utilized as an energy source. After seed extraction their mass decreases from 16 to 30% depending on the species. The analysis showed that the annual quantity of conifer cones that can be used as an energy source is on average 270 Mg of empty cones.
Juniperus communis L. is increasingly threatened in many parts of Europe, including the Baltic region. Our present study was aimed at evaluation of genetic diversity of J. communis populations of Lithuania. Fourteen selected populations differed in geography and habitats (coastal brown dunes covered with natural Scots pine forests, further referred as B; J. communis shrubs, F; transition mires and quaking bogs, D; subcontinental moss Scots pine forests, G; xero-thermophile fringes, E). Molecular variance was analyzed among populations (140 individuals, in total), employing 14 Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) markers. Percentage of polymorphic loci differed between populations belonging to the different habitat type, being the highest for population representing habitat F (68.2%) and the lowest for populations D (42.9%). The data demonstrate the possibility to underestimate or overestimate this parameter if some habitat populations are bypassed. Means per population of Nei‘s gene diversity and Shannon‘s information indexes, were 0.158 and 0.239, respectively. Significant correlation between genetic and geographic distance of populations of J. communis was documented by Mantel test. Bayesian analysis of ISSR data has separated populations of Southern Lithuania from Northern part. Juniperus communis populations representing different habitats showed moderate interpopulation variance at ISSR loci. In ISSR-based dendrograms, individuals were correctly allocated to populations, even in case of populations growing in 0.5 km vicinity (habitats D and G). Among all populations the most distinct one was representing habitat of J. communis shrubs (F) protected by EUNIS. Principal coordinate analysis of weighted averages of Ellenberg’s indicator values (EIV) for herbaceous species, separated populations according to habitat type, while the same type analysis of ISSR data allowed distinguishing E habitat populations from populations of all other habitat type but G. Our study shows that on the local (Lithuanian) scale, molecular variance between populations of J. communis at ISSR loci might be related to habitat type. For evaluation and preservation of diversity of J. communis, different assessment methods should be included and management strategies should be directed in the way to retain variety of habitats encompassing both widely spread and less common ones.
In this study, an Estonian tree-ring network of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H.Karst.), originating from both living trees and dead wood of construction wood, was used for determining the growth variations over the past 350 years (AD 1657–2009). Regional curve standardization was used to remove the non-climatic growth variations from the individual tree-ring series prior to dendroclimatic analyses to focus on the low-frequency (long-term and -period) growth variations. Previously, the chronology has been shown to correlate markedly well with Estonian precipitation history. Here we further detail this dendroclimatic connection. Correlations between the Estonian precipitation and treerings improved systematically with both the number of meteorological stations included and with the documented technical advances in the network of instrumental weather observations. The observed June precipiation explains roughly 20 percent of the tree-ring variance over the period when the network of weather observations is densest (1946–2009). On decadal and longer scales, the June precipitation explains higher portion of tree-ring variance, roughly 50 percent, over the full instrumental era (1866–2009). Comparison with previously published and similarly standardized tree-ring chronology from south-eastern Finland, based on Scots pine tree-rings, showed that the two chronologies exhibit several coinciding periods of ameliorated and deteriorated growth.
The potential of immature zygotic embryos to produce embryogenic tissue was tested using culture media differed in inorganic salt composition as well as plant growth regulator content. Explants cultured on DCR as well as MLV media gave the highest initiation percentages with maximum values of 8.8% (MLV) to 10.4% (DCR). Plant growth regulators content (standard or reduced) had no profound effect on embryogenic tissue initiation. Somatic embryo maturation as well as germination was dependent on the cell line and salt composition of the medium. Plantlet regeneration occurred in three cell lines out of five tested. During the maturation process profound changes occurred in the internal organisation of somatic embryos such differentiation of root meristem in precotyledonary somatic embryos and formation of provascular strands in cotyledonary somatic embryos.
new cultivar of Japanese Cedar is described and illustrated. It originated from seeds received in 1961 from Gadow Arboretum (E Germany) and was propagated by cuttings in 1978 and 1985. The maternal tree in Rogów was killed by frosts during severe winter of 1986/87. The newly described form differs from the type in having very short needles.
