The paper describes climatic conditions of the north-western part of Oscar II Land (Spitsbergen) based on meteorological data from 1975 to 2000, which were taken from Ny Alesund and Kaffioyra-Heggodden stations. The changes in annual courses of main climatic elements are investigated. However, the authors focused mainly on the analysis of summer climate, because most of the field work is conducted at this time of the year. Aside from the standard climatic analysis, the influence of atmospheric circulation on selected meteorological elements was also investigated. The climate of the north-western part of Oscar II Land was compared with the climates of the remaining areas of the western coast of Spitsbergen. It was found that the climate of the studied area differs considerably from the climate of the central-inner and southern parts of the western coast of Spitsbergen (areas represented by the Svalbard Lufthavn and Hornsund stations respectively). The differences in climatic elements, however, are not stable throughout the year and in particular seasons and months can even change signs. Thus, any generalisation of results obtained based on seasonal data is inadmissible. It was also found that the wind conditions of the Kaffioyrare- gion are more representative of the north-western part of Oscar II Land than are the wind conditions of the Ny Alesund region.
The paper aims to identify factors under climate change conditions that could impact innovativeness in grapevine growing in Poland. It is shown that today the viticulture cultivation in Poland is of little economic significance. However, based on primary data applied to econometric model, it is argued that driven by climate changes as well as due to other factors, grapevine growing might become a significant branch of agriculture. The estimates of the model, although randomized, suggest that there is a significant probability that in Polish viticultural farms adaptation measures applied as a respond to these factors will result with implementation of innovations and through overall development.
Positive correlation between seed weight and germination capacity is common for the vast majority of species. It is also known that seed weight can vary along a latitudinal gradient. The seed mass of the invasive Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera), which is native to East Asia, was examined in relation to distinct geographical regions in Poland (Bielsko-Biala: N49°52′32″, E18°57′43″; Katowice: N50°12′8.3″, E18°57′26″; Tworków: N50°01′22″, E18°15′28”); Hungary (Rum: N47°06′41″, E16°50′45″; Rábahídvég: N47°03′54″, E16°44′59″) and Germany (Halle: N51°28′47″, E11°57′12″; Marburg: N50°48′32″, E8°46′31″). The study revealed that seed mass varied both among the countries and among specific populations within Poland and Germany. In Hungary, the 50 seed lots were the lightest 0.29 g and 0.31 g in respective localities and the heaviest in single populations in Poland – 0.61 g and in Germany – 0.57 g. In the present study, populations located more southwards had the lightest seeds in contrast to the commonly encountered pattern. Higher temperature, lower precipitation and as a consequence, a shortage of water can be crucial factors that affect the seed mass of I. glandulifera. Taking into account the lower frequency and abundance of the species in Hungary, the lower seed mass may probably contribute to the limited distribution range in this region.

Drip irrigation system will play in the future a signifi cant role in fulfi lling the requirements of intensive, energysaving agricultural production. Total area under microirrigation in Poland can be now estimated as about 10 000 hectares. Drip irrigation is applied mainly in orchards, vegetable farms and greenhouses. The investigations on drip irrigation have shown a high infl uence of the agricultural conditions on the operation and reliability and productivity effects of the irrigation system. Paper present the investigation of the operation of drip irrigation systems in various regions of Poland. The analysis is based on the results of the manufacture coeffi cient of variation Cv, emitter exponent n, uniformity coeffi cient and detailed observation of the work time, breaks, failures and any other damages to the system.
In the climatic conditions of Poland the temporary lack of rainfall during the vegetation season, influenced on the water deficits in the top soil level. This situation can effect on the height and quality of yields in particular years. There is estimated that in the – so called – Large Valleys Region the water deficiency ranged 200-300 mm. Production of cucurbit’s vegetables in open field is strictly connected with thermal-rainfall conditions during the vegetation season. The optimal soil moisture is the very important factor for high and good quality yield. So, the production of the cucurbit plants should be connected with the irrigation installations. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of drip irrigation in cultivation of summer squash ‘Danka’ under light soil conditions. The trials were conducted in the years 2004 – 2006 at the experimental field in Kruszyn Krajeński near Bydgoszcz – on a soil of rye weak complex. The plot area for harvest was 9,1 m2. The irrigation rates were done on the base of soil water potential according to tensiometer indications. The irrigation was started when the soil water tension was – 0,04 MPa. The fruits of the summer squash were harvested in the technological maturity in the second decade of September in each year of the study. The single weight and number of the fruits as well as marketable yield from the unit area were estimated. In the pulp the dry matter, vitamin C, sugars and carotenoids content were determineted. It was found that drip irrigation significantly increased the marketable yield of fruits. The higher yield increases were detected in the years with lower rainfalls. The significant influence of drip irrigation on the content of vitamin C and sugars was stated. The dry matter and carotenoids content were higher in the fruits from the irrigated plots, but the difference was insignificant.
