Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs, LA and ALA) are not synthesized in mammals in the absence of their essential fatty acid precursors. However, hibernating animals and animals sleeping through the winter need sufficiently high amounts of these acids. The Eurasian badger does not hibernate, but sleeps over winter. In the autumn the body weight of adult badgers increases even twofold, since they put on fat before the winter. Fat is deposited primarily in the subcutaneous layer of adipose tissue, and much less commonly in the muscles, liver and around the intestines. The percentage composition of fatty acids (Saturated fatty acids-SFAs, monounsaturated fatty acids-MUFAs, PUFAs) is different in particular types of tissue. The lipids isolated from depot adipose tissues (suet, subcutaneous, perirenal, periintestinal fat) are dominated by monounsaturated fatty acids (on average 41.25%), followed by saturated fatty acids (33.53%). Polyunsaturated FAs have the lowest proportion in this groups of tissues, on average 17.75% of total FAs. On the other hand, liver lipids contain over 44% PUFAs. The fatty acid composition of lipids in badgers tissue includes considerable quantities of essential unsaturated n-6 and n-3 fatty acids of great pharmacological significance.

The aim of the studies was to compare the Ht values and the content of Hb in blood, total protein. Na, K, Ca, inorganic P and Mg in blood serum and bone tissue in lambs born in different seasons. A higher (P≤0.05) Ht value, K and Ca content, and a lower total protein, Na, inorganic P and Mg content were found in the blood of lambs born in autumn. A higher (P≤0.05) content of Ca and Mg, but a lower of Na, K, and inorganic P were found in the bone tissue of lambs born in autumn compared to the content of those elements in spring born lambs. The type of lambs’ birth was of no effect on the content of macroelements examined in their bone tissue. No differences were found in Hb content and body weight in lambs born in selected seasons.

The feeding habits and hoarding behaviour of the Eurasian red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris Linnaeus, 1758 were examined during autumn in Nopporo Forest Park (43°20'N, 141°30'E), in western Hokkaido, Japan. The diet consisted of 32 plant species. Twelve species were both eaten and hoarded (the two most common of which were Abies sachalinensis and Pinus koraiensis), and 20 species were eaten but not hoarded. The distance from where a food item was found to the hoarding spot averaged 50 m and differed significantly according to food type. Walnuts Juglans regia were transported farthest, and chestnuts Castanea crenata to the second farthest from the site of origin. Most food was hoarded beneath the ground surface (95%), but some were hoarded in forks of trees and in small tree holes. Squirrels selected food items of high energy content for hoarding, in preparation for winter and the breeding season.
