The results of several experimental studies have shown that ascorbic acid inhibits tumor growth and metastasis. Ascorbic acid is an antioxidant that acts as a scavenger for a wide range of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Both tumour metastasis and cell migration have been correlated with the intracellular ROS level, so it was postulated that the inhibitory effect of ascorbic acid derivatives on cell motility may be caused by scavenging of ROS. Time-lapse analyses of Walker 256 carcinosarcoma cell migration showed that both the speed of movement and the cell displacement were inhibited by ascorbic acid applied in concentrations ranging from 10 to 250 μM. This effect correlated with a reduction in the intracellular ROS level in WC 256 cells, suggesting that ROS scavenging may be a mechanism responsible for the inhibition of WC 256 cell migration. However, another potent antioxidant, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, also efficiently decreased the intracellular ROS level in WC 256 cells, but did not affect the migration of the investigated cells. These results demonstrate that intact, unmodified ascorbic acid applied in physiologically relevant and nontoxicconcentrations exerts an inhibitory effect on the migration of WC 256 carcinosarcoma cells, and that this may be one of the factors responsible for the anti-metastatic activity of vitamin C. However, our data does not support the hypothesis that the scavenging of intracellular ROS is the main mechanism in the inhibition of cancer cell migration by ascorbic acid.
The benefits of regular exercise on brain health are undeniable. Long-term exercise increases the production of reactive oxygen species in brain. Therefore, athletes often consume antioxidant supplements to remedy exercise-related damage and fatigue during exercise. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of ascorbic acid in the effects of different intensities of swimming exercise on the brain susceptibility to experimental epilepsy in rats. Ascorbic acid was administered intraperitoneally (ip) during three different swimming exercise programme for 90 days (15 min, 30 min, 90 min/day). The anticonvulsant activity regarding the frequency of epileptiform activity appeared in the 80 min after 500 units intracortical penicillin injection in 30 min and 90 min/day exercise groups. The administration of ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg, ip) did not alter the anticonvulsant properties seen in the in short-duration (15 min/day) swimming exercise group. The amplitude of epileptiform activity also became significant in the 110 and 120 min after penicillin injection in the moderate (30 min/day) and long duration (60 min/day) groups, respectively. The results of the present study provide electrophysiologic evidence that long-term administration of ascorbic acid causes anticonvulsant activities in the moderate and long-duration swimming exercise. Antioxidant supplementation such as ascorbic acid might be suggested for moderate and long-duration swimming exercise in epilepsy.
The aim of the presented study was to evaluate the reductive activity of antioxidants in the presence of carbon manufactured by Radio Frequency Plasma Activated Chemical Vapor Deposition method (RF PACVD). 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method was employed to estimate antioxidants reductive potential. Based on the experimental results, the antioxidant activity of carbon colloid was not confirmed. Nevertheless the reductive activity of antioxidants measured in time manner, in the presence of carbon, was significantly elevated comparing to the antioxidants alone. The presented results suggest that the surface of carbon syn-thetized by RF PACVD method suspended in water, creates more friendly reductive environment for antioxidants with hydroxyl groups (ascorbic acid - AA and butylated hydroxyanisole - BHA) then with sulfhydryl groups (glutathione - GSH).
The effects of vegetable oils („non-erucic-acid” rapeseed oil and sunflower oil) and animal fat (butter) on the development of experimental atherosclerosis were studied in rabbits kept during 12 weeks on a cholesterol-rich diet. The degree of atherosclerotic changes by calculating planimetrically the site of the areas of fatty infiltrations in the aorta, the concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides lipid peroxides in the serum and ascorbic acid content in the tissues was determined. The cholesterol-rich diet caused development of atherosclerotic changes, increased serum cholesterol and lipid peroxide levels and ascorbic acid concentration in the studied tissues. „Non-eru- cid-acid” rapeseed oil slowed down the development of experimental atherosclerosis in a degree comparable to the effects of sunflower oil.

Background. Researchers suspect that the accepted adequate ascorbic acid plasma concentration is not being met even after dietary intake of the recommended amount of vitamin C. Current dietary intake recommendation in Poland is 60 mg per day for women and 75 mg per day for man (EAR), while in Western Europe and North America is higher and amounts to 75-90 mg per day. Objective. The paper aimed at studying a correlation between composition of nutrients in daily diet and plasma vitamin C levels in university students. Materials and methods. This study examined diet composition and the nutritional status of ascorbic acid in plasma of 120 university students in Szczecin, Poland. Ascorbic acid was determined in blood plasma using HPLC method. The information concerning diet composition was collected using the method of “7-days food record” prior to blood collection. Results. Plasma ascorbic acid deficiency (<40 μmol/L) was observed in 23% of women and 28% of men. The average plasma ascorbic acid concentration was 48.65 μmol/L in women and 45.61 μmol/L in men. The average intake of vitamin C in women with observed deficiency was average 46.55 mg/day, whereas in men it was 48.56 mg/day. Conclusions. The recommendation of dietary intake of vitamin C in Poland is low in comparison to other countries. Population- based studies are necessary to determine the actual demand for vitamin C in various population groups in Poland.
In precise field trials at five localities in the CR within years 2004-2005 the effects of different locality conditions and yellow- and purple- fleshed potato cultivars on ascorbic acid (AA) and total polyphenol (TP) contents in tubers were determined. AA content on average of nine cultivars reached the value 170.3 mg·kg⁻¹ FM and was demonstrably affected by the genotype of cultivar and locality conditions. The highest level was achieved in Marabel cv.; in other eight cultivars AA contents lower by 5-33% were estimated. Among five localities the highest AA content at the locality in lowland region (174 m a. s.) with the warmest and dry climate and light-textured soils was determined. In the case of total polyphenols no significant difference among localities was found, but the tendency to higher TP (by 9-22% as compared to other localities) at the locality Stachy was observed, what was connected with apparently lower temperature during vegetation period at this locality. In Valfi purple flesh cultivar higher by 90% TP content was found as compared with the mean value for yellow flesh cultivars. In the group of yellow flesh cultivars significant differences of TP content among particular cultivars were also determined.
