Introduction. The aim of the present study is to determine the standard values of parameters describing postural stability: COP area, COP length and lower limbs loading symmetry index (SI). Material and Methods. 60 students of physiotherapy from the University School of Physical Education in Poznań participated in the study. In the case of 29 students, contraindications to participating in the study were identified. Ultimately, 31 participants were selected to take 30-second tests performed while standing on both feet, with and without visual control. Results. The standard values of the COP length parameter were determined. In the test with visual control, 6.5% of participants achieved high and very high scores. 87% achieved average scores. In the test without visual control, 9.7% of participants achieved high and very high scores, while 80.6% attained average scores. The SI index had a normal distribution. It showed that most people put the weight onto their left lower limb, both with and without visual control. Conclusion. Healthy, active adults between 21-24 years of age most often bear weight on the left lower limb. The values describing postural stability were above-average.
We report the case of 44-year-old woman with a left-sided Bochdalek hernia (BH) with concomitant partial situs inversus. The patient was presented from the outpatient clinic with lower chest discomfort. She had suffered from abdominal pain for one year, with no history of trauma, previous surgery, or extreme physical exertion. Chest radiograph revealed a large left-sided BH. The patient underwent thoracotomy. Intestinal organs, containing bowel, small intestine, caecum, and appendix were seen in the left hemithorax. Because of the failure to reduce the intestinal organs into the peritoneal cavity, laparotomy was performed. The right side of the abdominal cavity was empty. In conclusion, partial situs inversus was diagnosed. The diaphragmatic defect was repaired with non-absorbable sutures via laparotomy, and with a prolene mesh via thoracotomy. Bochdalek hernia with partial situs inversus is a rare clinical entity with none reported in medical literature. (Folia Morphol 2010; 69, 2: 119–122)
Thoracic kidney is the rarest, usually asymptomatic type of kidney ectopia. 2 cases of thoracic kidney discovered incidentally through chest radiography are reported. In both patients renal function tests were normal and no further treatment was necessary. Ultrasonography and computed tomography studies performed for confirmation of the diagnosis are presented. An embryonic background of this abnormality is discussed.
The discomalleolar ligament (Pinto’s ligament) is not described in the anatomy textbooks but was demonstrated by Pinto and others. This is a ligamentous structure connecting the malleus in the tympanic cavity and the articular disc and capsule of the temporomandibular joint. This anatomical relationship between the middle ear and the temporomandibular joint is supposed to be one of the explanations for the aural symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The objectives of our study were to determine: (1) the frequency of occurrence and morphology of the discomalleolar ligament, (2) its attachments, (3) the morphology of Pinto’s ligament in endoscopic visualisation, and (4) whether tension applied to the discomalleolar ligament could elicit movement of the malleus. Fourteen adult human temporomandibular joint and tympanic cavity specimens were examined with the use of an endoscope and then by gross dissection with the superior approach and with the use of the operating microscope. Endoscopic visualisation showed in four cases a band of tissue in the upper temporomandibular joint compartment, known as Pinto’s ligament. The dissections exposed a discomalleolar ligament in 11 specimens. We were able to identify two main types of this ligament on the basis of its shape. The discomalleolar ligament was either triangular in shape, as in the first group of seven specimens, or longitudinal in shape, as in the second group of four specimens. We observed that tension applied to the discomalleolar ligament resulted in movement of the malleus in three specimens.
The effect of gamma radiation with 0, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, and 450 Gy intensities on the longevity, total number of eggs, and the percent of hatched eggs laid by irradiated females of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) was evaluated. Two different groups (0–24 h old and 48–72 h old) of adult females were irradiated. The results showed that 350 and 300 Gy doses significantly reduced the longevity of the 0–24 h old females and the 48–72 h old females. The younger females were more tolerant at lower dose rates than the older females. There was a quadratic relationship between dose rates and young females, while it was linear in older females. The total number of eggs laid by females of both ages was significantly reduced with a linear trend by 250 Gy irradiation. The eggs laid by females of both the 0–24 h olds and the 48–72 h olds lost their hatchability when the dose rate was 350 Gy. It was concluded, that applying a dose rate of 320 Gy on one of the mates (male or female) before mating, or a 300 Gy on both of them, would be sufficient to cause sterility in adult mites.
The observational results of the morphology of the coronary sinus valve are presented in this study. Research was condyucted on material consisting of l00 adult human hearts of both sexes from l8 to 87 years of age. Basic morphological types of the examined structure are distiguished and the main traits regarding their histological nature are presented.
Occipitalization of the atlas is an osseous anomaly of the craniovertebral junction. The aim of this paper is to present an anatomical variant of the fused atlas with the occipital bone and discuss similar cases described in literature. The skull of an adult male analysed in this study belonged to the cranial collection of the Department of Anatomy of the Jagiellonian University, Medical Collage. A tight bony fusion between the anterior arch of the atlas, the left portion of the posterior arch, the lateral masses of the atlas, and the occipital bone was observed. Hence, the left and right superior articular facets of the atlas were fused with the corresponding occipital condyles. The anteroposterior dimension of both inferior articular facets was the same (20 mm), while the transverse diameter of the right one was considerably smaller (12 mm). The transverse diameter of the left inferior articular facets was 17 mm. The right and the left transverse process of the atlas were normally developed, each of them contained transverse foramen, and they were not fused with the occipital bone. The circumference of the foramen magnum was minimally diminished by the osseous structures of the atlas fused to the occipital bone. The sagittal and transverse diameters of the foramen magnum (38 mm x 34 mm) were within the normal range of variation. However, the asymmetrical anatomy of the inferior articular facets of the atlas give rise to speculation that movement in the atlantoaxial joint was disturbed by assimilation with the occipital bone. Introduction. Exercise-associated effects on the GH→IGF-1 axis were studied, mainly following aerobic exercise. Material and Methods. The effects of laboratory vigorous aerobic (10-min treadmill run at 85% of peak VO2 ) and standard all-out anaerobic (30 s Wingate anaerobic test- WAnT) tests on the GH→IGF-1 axis were determined in 12 healthy active females (24-34 years). The tests were performed in random order. Blood samples for GH and IGF-1 were collected before and 20, 30, 40 and 60 minutes after the beginning of each exercise test. Both tests were associated with significant increases in GH. Results. Peak GH was higher following the WAnT (11.0 ± 8.3 vs. 7.5 ± 7.3 ng/ml, respectively) but this difference was not statistically significant. However, the GH area under the curve (AUC) was signifi cantly greater in the anaerobic test as compared with the aerobic test. Only the WAnT was associated with a significant increase in IGF-1 levels (from 177.8 ± 47.2 to 198.8 ± 56.2, p < 0.02). However, no significant differences were found in peak IGF-1 and IGF-1 AUC following both tests. Vigorous aerobic and standard allout anaerobic laboratory tests led to significant GH increases in the same female individuals. GH and IGF-1 responses were greater following the WAnT. Conclusions. GH-IGF-1 changes may be used to gauge exercise intensity, not only following aerobic but also anaerobic exercise.
Background. The health benefits arising from antioxidant vitamins A, C and E are well recognised and their recommended dietary intake for the general population have been established. However, there is still a need for assessing antioxidant vitamin intake in different population groups. Objective. To assess intake of antioxidant vitamins: A, C, E and β-carotene, and to identify their major sources in the diets of healthy subjects. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 182 adults; both men and women from polish population. Antioxidant vitamin dietary intake was assessed by individual 3-day records. Data were analysed using updated “Polish Food Composition Tables” and ‘Dieta 5’ Software. Results. The average daily intake of antioxidant vitamins was: 1076 mg for vitamin A (including 46% of retinol and 55% of β-carotene), 107 mg for vitamin C and 9 mg for vitamin E. Higher dietary intake of these vitamins was observed in men compared to women. Conclusions. The average intake of antioxidant vitamins was found to be in recommended range, however, significant differences were observed between the lowest and the highest intake. They were related to differences in the consumption of food products recognized as major sources of vitamins A, C, E and β-carotene in study population.
Background. Decreased physical activity (PA), sedentary lifestyle and inappropriate dietary habits have been observed in modern societies in the past decades. Material and methods. Data were collected in summer, 2014. The representative (by age & gender) sample consisted of 910 adults. The research (entitled “E-Harmónia”) was carried out in two Hungarian counties, Baranya and Zala. We developed a tablet-based survey to examine PA using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) questionnaire and collected anthropometric data with body composition monitors. Data analysis was carried out with SPSS 22.0 for Windows. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Results. The sample size of adult participants was 910, their mean age was 43.2±14.4 years. We examined the level of physical activity in view of sociodemographic inequalities, like gender, age, education, marital status, employment form. Women and aged and young people were found to do carry out significantly less leisure time PA (p<0.05). Furthermore, we found significant relationship in PA and education level, age and employment form of the adults (p<0.001). Conclusions. In the present study according to the IPAQ questionnaires results we found significant differences in physical activity level and sociodemographic parameters, which helps to identify different risk groups to increase the effectiveness of phyisical activity interventions.
Aim of Study. To determine whether and to what extent selfefficacy, perceived fitness competence and perceived behavioral control are related to leisure time moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in adults. Material and Methods. The study involved 532 adults (including 379 women) aged 18 to 26 years. Physical activity (PA) was measured by means of a short self-report questionnaire, being a modified version of the very popular Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTQ). Each level of PA was described in a manner which enabled defining it by the participants with examples of activities representative for a given category, with 9 MET criteria for vigorous activity and 5 MET criteria for moderate intensity. Perceived physical competencies were measured by a relevant subscale of the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI). Results. On average, respondents undertook 2.5 hours of MVPA. Males were more active than females, and younger persons more active than older persons. For the whole sample, self-efficacy and perceived behavioral control were the two significant predictors of MVPA. However, in the case of the latter the effect size was small. In self-efficacy a nearly linear increase from sedentary to the most active group was observed. Relationships between perceived competencies, self-efficacy and perceived behavioral control and physical activity were age dependent. The comparison between younger and older adults revealed that in the younger age group all three control variables were related to physical activity, while in the older group only self-efficacy and perceived behavioral control were signifiant; however, in both cases the effect sizes were weak. Conclusions. The most promising interventions to increase PA are teaching strategies to cope with barriers of physical activity and convincing people that regardless of their levels their physical fitness and motor abilities enable them to be physically active. However, while it seems true for young adults, the factors determining the physical activity of older adults and reinforcement strategies look different.
There have been no reports on how the light-dark changes determine the locomotor activity of animals in the group of high reactivity (HR) and low reactivity (LR). In the present study we have compared selected parameters of the locomotor activity of the HR and the LR groups of the laboratory opossums and Wistar rats during consecutive, light and dark phases in the open field test. Sixty male Wistar adult rats, at an average weight of 350 g each, and 24 adult Monodelphis opossums of both sexes at an average weight of 120 g each were used. The animals’ activity for 2 h daily between the hours of 17:30 and 19:30, in line with the natural light-dark cycle were recorded and then analysed using VideoTrack ver. 2.0 (Vievpoint France). According to our results, we noted that a change of the experimental conditions from light to dark involves an increase in the locomotor activity in rats and opossums of the HR group, while there is no effect on the activity of the rats and opossums in the LR group. Locomotor activity in the HR rats, both in the light and dark conditions is characterised by a consistent pattern of change — higher activity in the first stage of the recording and a slowdown (habituation) in the second phase of the observation. The locomotor activity of the opossum, during both light and dark conditions, was observed to be at a consistently high level compared to the rats. (Folia Morphol 2013; 72, 4: 300–305)
