Aldoketoreductase 1C3 (AKR1C3) is a functional prostaglandin F synthase and a negative modulator of the availability of ligands for the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ). AKR1C3 expression is known to be associated with adiposity, one of the components of the metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to characterize the expression of AKR1C3 in the adipose tissue and adipocytes and to investigate its potential role in the metabolic syndrome. Using microarray analysis and realtime PCR, we studied the expression of AKR1C3 in adipose tissue samples from obese subjects with or without metabolic complications, during very low calorie diet-induced weight loss, and its expression in isolated human adipocytes of different sizes. The adipose tissue AKR1C3 expression levels were marginally lower in obese subjects with the metabolic syndrome compared with the levels in healthy obese subjects when analyzed using microarray (p = 0.078) and realtime PCR (p < 0.05), suggesting a secondary or compensatory effect. The adipose tissue mRNA levels of AKR1C3 were reduced during and after dietinduced weight-loss compared to the levels before the start of the diet (p < 0.001 at all time-points). The gene expression of AKR1C3 correlated with both adipose tissue mRNA levels and serum levels of leptin before the start of the diet (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). Furthermore, large adipocytes displayed a higher expression of AKR1C3 than small adipocytes (1.5-fold, p < 0.01). In conclusion, adipose tissue AKR1C3 expression may be affected by metabolic disease, and its levels are significantly reduced in response to dietinduced weight loss and correlate with leptin levels.
This paper presents the results of studies on the content of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the fat of wild boars and roe-deer shot in the region of Warmia and Mazuria during the 1993 hunting season. PCB levels in the adipose tissue of these animals were relatiely low. The average PCB content in wild boar fat was 21.8 μg/kg, and in roe-deer 9.7 μg/kg. PCB content was below 15 μg/kg in the majority of wild boar fat samples, and below 7 μg/kg in the case of roe-deer.
Culled breeding ostriches weighing 130-160 kg yield about 25 kg fat tissue that could possibly be used for supplementing human and animal diet. Cholesterol content of breast fat – 80 mg/100 g tissue – from the breeding ostrich females (n = 6) culled and slaughtered at the age of five years appeared similar to that reported of beef and lamb adipose tissue. In a sum of 17 fatty acids (FA) determined, the mono- and polyunsaturated FA accounted for 37.51 and 38.84%, respectively. The ratio polyunsaturated/saturated FA in breast fat of culled breeding ostrich females appeared higher than reported for other avian species.It is concluded that fat from culled breeding ostriches can be used as an additive to human or animal diet, thus allowing the farmer to gain more from ostrich production. Further research is needed on composition and properties of adipose tissue of ostriches, including slaughter, as well as breeding birds culled at different ages.
A significant increase in the incidence of obesity, which has taken place in recent years caused that began to talk about the epidemic of obesity. This problem is characteristic of highly developed countries. Increasingly, also occurs in developing countries, including Polish. It occurs in all age groups and in almost all social groups. The disease is currently diagnosed in almost 25% of the Polish population. Increasingly, it is also diagnosed in young women and pregnant women. The literature increasingly emphasized the importance of obesity in disorders of insemination and proper implantation the fertilized ovum. For women who are overweight and obese, more often than women with normal body weight, comes to ovulation disorders and disturbances in the proper implantation of the fertilized ovum. These disorders result from the accumulation of adipose tissue and hormonal disorders resulting from them. Influence on fertility of women have not only expressed as their body weight BMI, but also as the content in the body fat and its distribution. The higher the fat content in the body making it harder and longer may be infertility treatment. It also noted the relationship between fat distribution and duration of treatment of infertility and its effect. More and more often also emphasized the importance of incorrect diets in young women as a factor in reducing fertility. This article is an attempt to collect and characterize the major causes of infertility seen in young women who are overweight or obese.
