Sea-buckthorn: a species with a variety of uses, especially in land reclamation

Sea-buckthorn is an important species especially in terms of land reclamation, but it has also an appreciable commercial value. The aim of this review paper was to highlight the multiple uses of this shrub species across world. Data regarding taxonomy, chorology, ecological requirements and biological characteristics were also presented. Special attention has been given to the role of sea-buckthorn in land reclamation. The importance of this species is expected to increase in the future due to its high ecological amplitude and biological characteristics that make it suitable for many types of land, including arid terrains.

W artykule wykorzystano wyniki projektu badawczego, przyznanego przez NCN, pt. „Opracowanie bezodpadowej technologii przetwarzania owoców rokitnika (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) oraz ocena właściwości bioaktywnych otrzymanych produktów”, a także pracy doktorskiej autorki artykułu. Przedstawiono charakterystykę owoców rokitnika (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) oraz możliwości i kierunki ich wykorzystania w przetwórstwie. Bogactwo składników odżywczych i bioaktywnych sprawia, że są to owoce cieszące się coraz większym zainteresowaniem przemysłu spożywczego oraz farmaceutycznego. O zaletach sensorycznych, żywieniowych i przetwórczych owoców rokitnika w dużej mierze decydują podstawowe składniki: cukry, kwasy organiczne, witaminy, związki aromatyczne, ale przede wszystkim bogactwo substancji bioaktywnych. Dodatkową zaletą owoców rokitnika jest to, że można je wykorzystać do tworzenia produktów owocowych nowej generacji, innowacyjnych z udziałem lipidów tzw. samoemulgujących, typu oleosomy.

Storied pattern, in the arrangement of both fusiform initials and the rays in cambium of Hippophae rhamnoides, develops in ontogeny relatively quickly and becomes clearly visible in terminal parenchyma of third and fourth annual ring. At first, anticlinal longitudinal divisions and restricted intrusive growth of fusiform initials lead to the formation of their characteristic horizontal tiers. Then, initiation of secondary rays, taking place rather within such tiers, not between them, makes possible the formation of storied ray pattern. New secondary rays originate most frequently from fusiform initials by their segmentation. This makes the appearance of ray tiers rather quick. However, the high order in the structure of cambium of Hippophae rhamnoides is also due to another, very curious and not known until now mechanism. It operates through limited in its range, thus highly controlled, vertical migration of rays on the cambial surface. This applies to asymmetrically positioned rays either primary, which are often originally sited "out of order" or secondary, initiated off-centre within the existing tiers. Excessively asymmetric rays, lying accidentally on the border between two neighbouring storeys, often undergo splitting and then the derivative rays move toward the centres of the storeys. Ray displacement is due to elimination of one or two of ray initial cells on one edge of the ray and simultaneous, multiple divisions adding new ray cells on the opposite edge.

Uprawy innowacyjne wzbudzają coraz większe zainteresowanie w polskim sektorze rolno-spożywczym. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje przykład rokitnika zwyczajnego jako innowacyjnej uprawy o wszechstronnym zastosowaniu w przemyśle spożywczym, kosmetycznym i farmaceutycznym. Uprawy rokitnika mogą spełniać jednocześnie szereg funkcji w ochronie środowiska naturalnego i krajobrazu. W Polsce istnieją dogodne warunki glebowe i klimatyczne do uprawy rokitnika, a perspektywy rozwoju rynku konsumenta na produkty z tej rośliny są obiecujące. Zastosowanie rokitnika w polskim sektorze rolnym może okazać się atrakcyjną alternatywą dla tradycyjnych upraw oraz zagwarantować rolnikom wysoką opłacalność produkcji.

The recipes of sea buckthorn jams, sugar-sweetened and energy-reduced, sweetened with the mixture of sweeteners were developed. Apples, raspberries, strawberries and gooseberries were used as a complementary raw materials, in order to obtain products of the acceptable, harmonized taste. The study of the chemical composition of jams included the determination of soluble solids, total sugars, total acidity, vitamin C, total carotenoids and total phenolic compounds. The total antioxidant capacity of jams was also measured. The highest values of vitamin C and polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity were found in sea buckthorn-strawberry jam, but the highest value of carotenoids content were found in sea buckthorn-raspberry jam. These products also gained the highest overall sensory quality scores. The usefulness of two commercial sweetener mixtures for production of jams with reduced sugar content was tested. The recipe of sea buckthorn-apple jam was developed, in which the whole amount of added sugar was replaced by the selected mixture of sweeteners. It allowed to decrease the energy value of this product for about 70%.
