Contemporary Egypt faces many environmental hazards. Increasing overpopulation in the Nile valley and delta, poor sanitary conditions in rural areas and in poor urban districts result in deteriorated living conditions for most of the population. In practice, agricultural production can increase only if farming is intensified. The construction of the Aswan High Dam did not lead to the promised extension of arable land; on the contrary, this land is shrinking due to construction and housing developments. After the dam construction, soil is no longer washed by annual floods and no new layers of fertile alluvium accumulate. The introduction of modern irrigation systems such as rain-guns and spray irrigation are affordable only to few users.
