The hazard posed by heavy metals goes back to the beginning of industrialization. Burning fossil fuels leads to pollution of the atmosphere and to irreversible soil contamination in turn. Cultivars take up heavy metals, incorporating them into the food chain. The author discusses the content of specific heavy metals in various parts of plants and foodstuffs, highlighting the limited potential of agriculture to counteract the adverse effects of heavy metals. To this end, measures must be taken to eliminate emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.

The EU agricultural policy is related to the dissemination of environmentally friendly methods applied in agriculture. However, it must be based on thorough knowledge of the principles of nature. If a farmer decides on environmental methods of production, he must realise the extent of the harvest decrease versus traditional methods and the lower outlay of expenditure on production inputs. The article discusses the economical assessment of food production by environmentally friendly methods in the Experimental Section of the Zootechnics Institute in Grodziec Śląski.

In popular understanding ecological agriculture means abandoning the use of chemicals in agricultural production. Such a production system can result in a fall in crops and hence a decrease in agricultural production and its profitability. A concept of integrated agriculture, where proper proportions between economy and ecology are established, may be a remedy. This kind of agriculture, in which chemicals are applied "as little as possible and as much as needed" is more nature-friendly.
