A biometrical description of the inferior pharyngeal bones ossa pharyngea inferiora, collected from 94 common bream Abramis brama from the Szczecin Lagoon (on November 1995) is presented. The problem of bilateral asymmetry of the pharyngeal teeth is included separately.
The river lamprey caught in Lake Dabie in the autumn seasons of 1997 (35 individuals) and 1998 (53 individuals) had mean individual weights of 145.1 and 139.3 g, respectively, their respective mean body lengths being 443.9 and 400.8 mm. The largest and the smallest individuals weighed 226.9 and 70.4 g, respectively. The post-dorsal lengths was the only plastic character, out of the 16 characters determined separately in females and males (sex ration of 2.1:1), which showed a substantial between-sexes difference.
The signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana, 1852) of North American origin was introduced to Europe (to Scandinavia) in the 1960s. Since that time due to translocation to many countries, biological features and ecological plasticity, it became widespread, invasive and displaced native species. The paper reports first multi- point colonization of P. leniusculus in the Polish rivers. The aim of the study was to determine the current distribution of the signal crayfish in the coastal Baltic tributary (the River Wieprza) after 20 years of deliberate releases in its drainage area. During sampling at 28 sites with use of the “Pirate” crayfish traps and hand collection methods in spring and summer 2014, 127 P. leniusculus individuals were found at 8 sites in the Wieprza and its two tributaries, both away from and close to known sites of their introduction in 1995 and 1996 in the Wieprza River drainage area. The species spreads via the Wieprza River towards the Baltic brackish waters. With such expansion of this species, it is expected to be found in Polish coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and in other coastal rivers in the near future. The conflict between legal aspects of the signal crayfish farming, colonization by the species of the natural aquatic ecosystems and the expectations of consumers is discussed.
Background. Vendace, Coregonus albula (L.), is one of the most valuable components of Polish lake ichthyofauna. The vendace from different lakes differ in their principal vital characteristics (such as growth rate etc.) and it is therefore crucial to determine those characteristics from different throphic types of lakes in order to implement proper measures of fisheries management for those coregonids. The aim of the present paper was therefore to learn principal biological features of vendace populations representing three different Pomeranian lakes. Materials and Methods. Comparative biological studies were carried out on 136 vendace from Pełcz Wielki Lake, 304 from Bytyń Wielki Lake, and 62 from Wełtyń Lake (Pomerania Lakeland) collected within 2002-2003. The age and growth rate of the fish were determined from scales. Fulton′s condition factor and the total length-weight relation were used to determine fish condition. Results. Gillnet selectivity influenced fish age structure and size. For example, among 502 vendace obtained, in total, from the three lakes, 75.7% (380 specimens) were 2+. The results of back-calculations and the parameters of von Bertalanffy′s growth equation revealed distinct disproportions in the total length in individual age groups (Pełcz Wielki Lake: Lt = 213.22[1 - e-0.49576(1 + 1.055013)]; Bytyń Wielki Lake: Lt = 219.17[1 - e-0.733553(1 + 0.040147)]; Wełtyń Lake: Lt = 255.08[1 - e-0.571108(1 + 0.023036)]) Slower length- and weight growth rates were observed in the fish from Pełcz Wielki Lake. Conclusion. The growth rates, determined using back-calculations, were different for the vendace populations representing lakes Pełcz Wielki, Bytyń Wielki, and Wełtyń in the sequential years of fish lives. The fish from Wełtyń Lake were characterized by average growth, whilst the fish from the remaining reservoirs were characterized by slow or very slow growth. The lower condition values and growth rates from Pełcz Wielki Lake were probably the result of poor environmental conditions in this body of water.
