New trends of physical activity in health education

63%
Health is no doubt the most important value of an individual. Every one of us needs to maintain and improve their mental and physical fitness. The body as well as joints are subject to the process of aging. However, these processes can be delayed via applying training programs presented in this paper, which deals with the role of three various forms of physical activity in health education – Power yoga, Pilates and SM system. The aim of this contribution is to present these activities as new opportunities that have a positive effect on physical and mental state of an individual, sup-ported by self-control and self-actuation.
The aim of work was to determine the effects of 8-week strength-endurance training program on somatic indicators in senior females. Applying bioelectrical impedance analysis method (InBODY 230 device) we evaluated the following parameters: body weight, BMI, body fat, total skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass in left and right upper and lower extremities, trunk muscle mass, and the mineral mass in the body. To assess regularity of physical activities, variability of lifestyle and quality of life, we used a standardized survey questionnaire. The study was carried out on 29 senior citizens, of the average 70.28 years of age and BMI 26.47 kg/m². A group of active elderly women underwent an 8-week strength-endurance program, including exercises focused primarily on the development of strength abilities of the upper limbs, and secondarily on developing strength abilities of lower extremities and developing general aerobic abilities. The influence of the aerobic program induced statistically significant increase in the total skeletal muscle mass from the initial value of 22.966 kg to 23.552 kg, an increase by 0.552kg (p≤0.01) of the monitored parameter. On the contrary, the parameter of body fat percentage of the studied group showed significant decrease of the input value of 36.207%, to the output value of 35.062%, representing a change at the level of 1.145% (p ≤0.01). By assessment of changes in the muscle mass of upper limbs and the trunk, we found a statistically significant increase, which reflects a change in the total quantity of the skeletal muscle (p ≤0.005). The mineral mass in the probands increased by only 0.091 kg. However, this increase was confirmed at 0.1% level of statistical significance (p≤0.001). The above results indicate that regular performance of physical activities in groups of the elderly proves to be efficient in preventing sarcopenia, obesity and maintaining a balance of the particular tissues making up the total body composition.
Introduction. The study aims to determine the level of awareness and meeting recommendations regarding physical activity in selected chronic diseases patients groups in eastern Slovakia. We further focused on the role of the physician and medical staff in providing recommendations on performing physical activity in the patients’ treatment as well as meeting these recommendations by the patients. Material and Methods. The study comprised 893 patients (353 males and 540 females) of average age 54.24 years. The dominant condition for participating in the research was the occurrence of one or more diagnoses out of three underlying chronic diseases (cardiovascular disease, oncology disease, metabolic disease) that do not prevent physical activity. For data collection, a non-standardized questionnaire had been applied, as part of the questionnaire battery explicitly designed for the research. The results were analyzed in relation to the chronic diseases groups and gender. Results. More than 60% of the surveyed acknowledged the importance of physical activity in treating their diseases; however, only one-third of patients performed physical activity regularly. Nearly half of patients were provided only with general information concerning physical activity by their physicians. Similarly, half of patients received information from their physicians on the minimum requirements for physical activity and were aware of exercises to be carried out in the prevention and treatment of their diseases, but showed no interest in performing those. Differences in patientsˈ awareness of PA within the individual chronic disease groups were significant. Gender-related differences were found significant only in particular cases. Conclusions. The study supports the importance of education and propagation of healthy lifestyle, inherently including regular physical activity.
