The level of magnesium, calcium, zync and copper in blood serum of three breeds of horses: hanower, wielkopolska andardenwas marked during a season when horses do not graze on pastures. Results did not indicate significant statistical differences in contents ofmetab among studied breeds of horses.
The resting concentrations of cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerols (TG), phospholipids (PL), total lipid (TL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-cholesterol, LDL-C) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-C), additionally magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) levels were examined in 10 young Standardbred horses after six months of physical training. Blood serum and standardized laboratory methods were used for determining TG, TC and HDL-C concentrations, as well as Mg and Ca. The amounts of TL, LDL-C and VLDL-C were counted by use of the Thurnham (TL) and Friedewald equations (LDL-C,VLDL-C). Results indicated that serum total lipids, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C and VLDL-C differences before and after conditioning were relevant. There was a significant increase in the serum Mg concentration while the level of Ca was found to be unchanged. This study concludes that a long-term moderate exercise program can improve serum lipid and lipoprotein pattern and Mg concentration in the trotters which may be beneficial to their performance.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of environmental fluorine contamination on the adenylate nucleotides (AMP, ADP, AMP), total nucleotide pool (TAN), and adenylate energy charge (AEC) in the erythrocytes of heifers. The concentration of F in serum as well as ATP, ADP, AMP, TAN contents and AEC of red cells were also determined. The animals exposed to F- (group A) came from farms situated about 2-3 km away from the Police chemical plant. The control group involved animals from an ecologically clean area (group B). In comparison with the control, heifers from a study group showed a significant decrease in ATP (p≤0.001) and ADP (p≤0.01), with a parallel increase in erythrocyte AMP (p≤0.001). The means serum F- concentration was higher in exposed animals (6.5 μM, whereas in the control group it was 4.3 μM). The differences were statistically significant (p≤0.05). Both the TAN concentration in serum and the level of AEC in the group of heifers exposed to high F concentration was significantly lower than in the control group (p≤0.001).
Porównywano stężenie Ca, P i Mg w surowicy krwi krów przed porodem w okresie żywienia letniego i zimowego. Uzyskano właściwe poziomy badanych pierwiastków w obydwu sezonach utrzymania, co świadczyłoby o prawidłowym żywieniu tych zwierząt. Stwierdzono wysoką dodatnią korelację pomiędzy stężeniem Ca i P w okresie letnim oraz Ca i Mg przy żywieniu zimowym.
This study aimed at determining relationships between the age of the Wielkopolski horses, ATP in whole blood and in the erythrocytes, and between erythrocyte Na+, K+-ATPase activity, and serum concentrations of mineral components. ATP was measured in whole blood and in erythrocytes by HPLC method. Serum concentrations of Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ were measured spectrophotometrically, while Na+ and K+ by flame photometry. In horses aged from 4 to 48 months, a dynamic decrease in ATP activity was found. Erythrocyte Na+, K+-ATPase activity decreased proportionally with the decrease in ATP activity. The results of this study may enable planning physical effort of horses at optimum use of energetic efficiency of their erythrocytes and mineral components in relation to their age.
The level of natrium, kalium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, zinc, cooper and ferrum in blood serum of men which cover the line by vinyl polychloride (PCV) was marked. Results indicate a large increase of magnesium, zinc, ferrum and chloride, a large decrease of calcium and significant decrease of kalium in blood serum.
The genus Rhodiola (Crassulaceae) consists of many species, growing mainly in Asia and traditionally used as adaptogens and anti-inflammatory drugs. In order to elaborate herbal immunostimulator which could be safely given to pregnant women, we performed a study on immunotropic effects of feeding pregnant and lactating mice Rhodiola kirilowii extracts. This paper presents the results of the first part of our study – spleen content of selected polyphenols, spleen cellularity, splenocytes phenotype and their response to mitogens. Experiments were performed on adult inbred females of Balb/c strain, mated with adult males. Females, since copulatory plug was noted, up to the 28-th day after delivery were fed daily with 20 mg/kg b.m. water (RKW) or hydro- lcoholic (RKW-A) extracts of Rhodiola kirilowii. Results: 1. Significantly lower proportion of pregnant mice in experimental groups than in the control. 2. Cellularity of spleen and flavonol quercetin spleen concentration were significantly lower in experimental groups in comparison to the controls. 3. Flavanols ( (+)-catechin and epicatechin) levels were significantly higher in the spleens of experimental mice than in the controls. 4. Positive correlation between spleen cellularity and quercetin, and negative correlation between spleen cellularity and epicatechin content were observed. 5. Spleen mass and spleen lymphocytes phenotype and proliferation in RKW and RKW-A fed mice did not differ from the control. These results, together with suspicion of some embryo- oxicity, are worrying and eliminate the possibility of use Rhodiola kirilowii extracts for long-term treatment in pregnant females.
