W latach 2004-2007 przeprowadzono badania z 90 nowymi genotypami pszenicy jarej T. durum pozyskanymi z ICARDA w Aleppo.

A study on 90 new T. durum genotypes achieved from ICARDA (Aleppo) was carried out in 2004-2007. These were local Egyptian populations - mainly from Al Minya, El Giza, Suhaj, and Sinai provinces. All genotypes were assessed in details during the four-year field experiment cycle concentrating on such traits as: resistance to lodging and fungal diseases, vegetation period and more important sub-phases duration, plant height, rachilla length, number of spikelets per ear, spike density, number of grains per spike and spikelet, 1000-kernel weight, as well as total protein content in grain. The studied material was greatly differentiated in reference to all the analyzed traits, although the number of grains per spike and spikelet, grain weight per ear, as well as protein content in grain indicated considerable genotype-environmental interaction, which was proved by insignificant or low values of correlation coefficients for years. For instance, in an unfavourable 2007, mean weight of grains per ear amounted to 1.05 g, while in 2006 - 1.54 g. However, a number of interesting genotypes of stable and high weight of grain per ear, high protein level in grain, and characterized by resistance to lodging and fungal diseases could be distinguished among the analyzed population. Such genotypes can be a promising source of desired traits for practical breeding of durum wheat in Poland.
