The effects of temperatures of 5, 10, 15°C at the beginning of seedling growth on the development of sunflower ‘Wielkopolski’ were evaluated. For this purpose for the first 5 weeks the germinated seeds and seedlings were kept at these temperatures for various periods and then transferred to the field. At the early plant development the beginning of emergence (T1), mean emergence time (T), uniformity (T90-10) and percentage of seedlings emergence were estimated. After transferring plants to the field plant height, growth stages according to BBCH scale, date of beginning of plant development and seed maturation as well as the weight of anthocarps and seeds were determined. The studies showed that the best thermal conditions at the beginning of plant development are 15°C for 5 weeks. The seedlings emergence was the earliest (after 3,5 days from sowing) and was characterized by high uniformity in comparison with other thermal conditions. Plant flowering and seed maturation were the fasted due to these thermal conditions. However, these conditions resulted in the fact that the plants were the smallest and gave the lowest seed yield in comparison with those one kept for 5 weeks at 5°C. On the contrary, the effect of 5°C for 5 weeks significantly increased plants height, weight of anthocarps and seeds. Similar effect was observed when plants were kept at 5°C for the first 4 weeks, and than for a week at 10°C. In natural conditions soil reaches 5°C as soon as the first decade of April. It will make possible an early seed sowing, thereby accelerating plant flowering and seed maturation in more favourable weather conditions.
