Thes paper presents the results of field study and observation carried out on four experimental plots located on the inner waste heap of „Kazimierz Północ” opening pit. The dynamics of moisture in the wet 2002 and during the dry vegetation period in 2004 was analysed in detail. The results of the investigations confirmed that the moisture of the upper layers of agriculturally recultivated soil of post-mining areas depended first of all on the distribution and density of precipitation during the particular decades and months. During the wet and hot growing seasons the moisture of the upper layers of these grounds were optimized which assured the correct development of cultivated plants. However, during the dry and hot vegetation period in 2004 water reserves decreased under the water level which was easily accessible to plants. The largest decrease in humidity during this period and the longest water deficit (from 42 to 59 days) was observed in profiles with a sandy clay layer. The minimum water storage in these profiles exceeded the humidity responsible for permanent wilt. The crop of spring barley in 2004 was only 4.2 dt·ha⁻¹ and was eight times smaller than the average yield on the post-mining grounds in previous years. The crop of Lucerne (340 dt·ha⁻¹ of green mass) decreased about 34% in comparison with previous years. The results of investigations showed the necessity to increase the retention capacity of the upper layers of post-mining grounds.
