Wegetarianie zazwyczaj nie palą tytoniu, ograniczają lub wykluczają alkohol, są bardziej aktywni fizycznie. Korzyści zdrowotne wynikające z tego stylu życia w znacznej mierze zależą od tego, na ile uda się prawidłowo zbilansować dietę i dostarczyć wszystkich niezbędnych składników odżywczych, w przeciwnym razie może dojść do zaburzeń zdrowia na tle niedoborów składników odżywczych. Ryzyko związane z występowaniem niedoborów pokarmowych u wegetarian jest tym większe, im bardziej restrykcyjna forma diety jest wybierana.
