Badano wpływ spęczniania nasion w chłodzie (7°C; tzw. chłodna imbibicja) na przebieg ich kiełkowania oraz dalsze procesy wzrostowe i rozwojowe części nadziemnych siewek kilku wytworzonych bądź zarejestrowanych po roku 2000 polskich genotypów kukurydzy: odmian i rodów. Ziarniaki wysiano do szalek Petriego z podłożem: gleba organiczna + piasek + torf (3:1:1; v/v/v) i inkubowano przez 7 dni w temperaturze 8°C lub 20/17°C (dzień/noc) bez dostępu światła, a następnie przełożono do skrzynek z analogicznym podłożem na głębokość 5 cm, i umieszczono w szklarni (temperatura 20/17°C, fotoperiod 15/9 godz. (dzień/noc), wilgotność względna (RH) 30%), gdzie siewki rosły do fazy w pełni wykształconego trzeciego liścia (21 dni).

The influence of caryopses imbibition in chilling (7°C; cold imbibition) on germination pattern and subsequent growth and development of the aerial parts of seedlings of several Polish maize genotypes (cultivars and strains), produced or registered after 2000, were studied. The caryopses were sown into the Petri dishes filled with the medium: brown soil + sand + peat moss (3:1:1; v/v/v), incubated for 7 days at 8°C or 20/17°C (day/night, without illumination), then transplanted into the same soil mixture, 5 cm depth, and placed in a greenhouse (20/17°C, photoperiod 15/9 h (day/night) relative humidity 30%), where the seedlings were grown till the fully developed 3rd leaf (21 days). At this stage plants were subjected to chilling (7°C), or 20/17°C (day/night). After next 7 days the seedlings were recovered at 20/17°C for 7 days. The impact of cold imbibition on germination ability, estimated by percentage of seeds germinated after 7 days at 20/17°C (day/night), ranged from 0 to 90%. The results were compared with those obtained for seeds germinated continuously at 20/17°C which had the germination ability range of 0-75%. In the case of two genotypes the stimulation of germination was noticed, the inhibition in other two, and no response of four. Percent of properly formed seedlings obtained after 14 days of vegetation at 20/17°C was smaller in the case of chill-imbibed seeds in all genotypes except KB 1903 cultivar. However, among the studied genotypes and cultivars of maize some were found that responded extremely to cold imbibition, as in the case of two cultivars (KB 1903 and PR39G12) the treatment enhanced the acceleration of growth and development of seedlings at the stage of post-chilling recovery, but also caused the death of the imbibing seeds of the strain K223 × K227. Therefore, the examination of seed vigour by the germination ability index does not reflect the vigour of seedlings. Also, no relationship was found between the resistance of caryopses to cold imbibition and seedlings to chill.
